MGS3 has the best ending in the series. I'll give it that.

The entire crew is great, not just Para-Medic.

and if all you care about is urgency and plot revelations then take the five hours of Codec MGS2 gives you because almost all of its big plot bombs are done via 20 minute Codec conversation

MGS2 went off the rails overboard with it. Sometimes less is more. MGS1 had the absolute perfect balance.

I'd probably pick MGS4 and heck even Death Stranding to have better codec than MGS2 because at least it gets it point across quick without beating around the bush for the sake of pretentious complexity.

And sometimes more is more, but at least MGS3 gives you the option to have more if you want it without forcing you to sit through a ton at a time.

You can literally spend over an hour at the beginning of MGS3 exhausting all the conversations available to you, or you can just ignore them and press forward.

mgs4 was like 70% cutscene and codec but still pretty epic, particularly act 4

Every mainline MGS game is the best MGS game for different reasons.

There is no other AAA game series that comes even close to being this varied and while still maintaining it's quality.

No MGS3 has best boss fights, The End alone is better than all the bosses in the first game. Final fight with The Boss is also leagues more interesting and memorable than Liquid's little fisticuffs duel.

3 is actually better in every other way as well. Best story, best characters (Big Boss is cooler than Solid Snake, etc.) and most fun ways to utilize its mechanics. The freedom it gives you to mess around is unreal.

I've always been a Twin Snakes defender but MGS1 is honestly still good today. The controls are super limited in comparison, but the game never makes you do anything MGS2-esque, so it's not frustrating at all. And all the narrative and level design and such is so good that you don't even realize how old the game you're playing is.

I was having this convo a while ago, and we came to the conclusion that all the MGS games feel like the best MGS when you're playing them. I would always say 3 is the best when comparing them all together, but in the moment playing MGS1, you can't help but feel "man this is so perfect, I wish all the MGSes were like this". And that applies to all the other numbered ones too except maybe 4.
