The US has a much larger population, so I don't think it's that surprising that we have more cases. Maybe I'm just trying to make myself feel better.

Shouldn't proportions be taken into account? I mean are any places in Italy as dense as somewhere like NYC?

the point isnt to fear monger, just illustrate how quickly this shit spread and that people need to be smart.

can you update this with deaths instead?

because it seems like the us has a way tamer version of the virus that isn't killing people as much

I didn't mean to accuse anyone of fear mongering, I just wanted to put it into a proper context for those who would panic. We need to take this seriously and do our part.

Its too soon to say that, and part of what is killing so many Italians isn't actually the disease but their inability to treat that many people with the disease.

Most European major cities and suburbs are more populated than their US equivalent.

my immediate instinct is to say this chart is misleading

italy has a much older population, they were on the backfoot on recognising how bad the infection festered largely undetected in communities, denser population, worse health care system and they have way less people than america

i mean there might be some correlation and patterns but i wouldn't place too much faith in it

it's more of how many old people are in italy. a lot of their deaths are people 79+. they also don't have enough doctors to care for everyone. i don't remember hearing about china having to decide on who lives or dies. they opened a bunch of temporary hospitals for the virus and ended up closing all of those know. italy already surpassed the deaths china had in half of the amount of time. the death count in USA is really low.

china has no new cases yesterday. might be the 2nd day in a row.

china 4% death rate
italy 8.5%
usa 1.2%
