Real answer: Old English had gendered nouns, and it so happened that the plural form of feminine words that ended in -s such as ms (mouse) and ls (louse) is - s (ms and ls which are pronounced the same as today's words).
House (hs) was a gender neutral word, so it remained the same in the plural form (hs) and picked up an 's' later on in the English language for its plural form. --- Hmm... ... Copied to Clipboard!
