Personally, the COVID-19 crisis has converted me from being a staunch democratic libertarian to perceiving that the only logical way forward for humanity or, truth be told, for any individual nation is for a totalitarian, *moderate* government.

Please note, ANTIFA and far right detractors, I have stipulated that there should be a moderate totalitarian government. None of your Communist or Fascist trappings here, please, we aren't interested.

This will be a moderate world for moderate people.

Because, as we all know, one of the things that totalitarian governments tend to do best is moderate themselves.

I went to walmart tuesday. Some of the shelves were sparse but definitly not picked clean, and they had a ton people restocking them at around noon, which is unusual during normal circumstances.

Our food supply chain is pretty damn strong in this country. The idea that we're gonna "run out of food" is quite frankly silly. You have any idea how much food this country wastes every year? We're good.

A totalitarian government only means that one person is able to run the country in his own personal interest. It doesn't really matter at that point whether they call themselves fascists or communists or moderates.
If I were being flippant, I would ask you about the word in parentheses following your username.
If I were not being flippant, I would wonder what the difference was in the current system - what is to stop current national leaders from running a country in their own personal interest? Do you really think that if Donald Trump or Boris Johnson were (Heaven forefend) to try to tilt the scales in their own favour, they would not be able to do so?

Overly defensive? My dear boy, you obviously have no idea what overly defensive looks like. I am mildly amused at most.

What mechanisms do you put in place to ensure that a totalitarian government stays moderate?

First of all, I propose the establishment of a worldwide, multinational organisation of impeccable morals. Let us call them WMOIM
This, of course, will be enforced internally by the codification of laws concerning the following:

  • All decisions of government must be commonsensical and pass "The Pub Test"
  • Any MWOIM officers enticed with a bribe will be given the sum of said bribe, multiplied twice upon informing
  • Any MWOIM officers accepting bribes will be executed using a method that's suitably barbaric
  • Any government officials found to be corrupt by a proper investigation of MWOIM officers will be executed, without trial, since trials allow situations in which jurors or judges can become corrupt
  • Anyone found hoarding products vital to public wellbeing and/or piece of mind* will be executed, without trial, by discretion by WMOIM officers

* including but not limited to: toilet paper, paper towel, dry pasta, frozen pasta meals, pasta sauce, Parmesan cheese, biscuits, muesli bars, paper towel, pasta sauce, toilet paper, frozen deserts, toilet paper and dried pasta

Is it guillotines? Because it usually ends up being guillotines.

Whole lot of executions with no trials going on in your "moderate" government, there.

This could have been entertaining if you weren't so obvious and bad at this.

How many people die each day due to Coronavirus, my dear boy? These "executions" would pale in number to the masses reaped by the dual scythes of sickness and poverty.
One of the aphorisms Socrates himself lauded was "nothing too much". Pity, for I believed this was inscribed upon the lintel of the temple at Delphi, but them's the breaks, I suppose.

My point being, everything is good in moderation, even capital punishment and especially mercy.

Electric cars were "proven" to be impractical and commercial suicide to invest in until the development of the Tesla.

Prior to the space race, people were still arguing that it was "proven" that rockets could not leave the atmosphere, since there was nothing to push against".

To extend a metaphor, in this case, there will be everything to push against.

The problem is theories are based on people practicing rational self interest, yet we don't seem to teach it. This is honestly a good example. People should have some emergency food on hand for any number of reasons beyond COVID, as well as some savings for tough times. Instead we've got people that thought things will always be fine, always keep running, and the first sign something might break in the system caused people to stockpile in panic instead of saying "well, I have the box of rice in the cupboard for a reason." And before anyone butts in about "not everyone can" the belief we don't have to prepare for a rainy day is often why some people have ended up in that situation.

In other words, my dear boy, it's theoria vs. praxis.

In this case, my praxis is so radical it's tubular.
