That they only deserve minimum wage because their jobs don't contribute enough to society to justify a higher wage.

Now we find ourselves in the face of a global pandemic, where the CEOs making 10 figures are sitting at home comfortable, while the jobs of those minimum wage workers are considered so essential that these businesses are forced to stay open.

Lol.

Not really, unless they are unionized or work in areas where the unions still have some power most of them make minimum wage or barely above.

If minimum wage/"entry level job" workers all didn't show up for a day the country would collapse.

I use to work at an AMC movie theater in a fairly affluent part of the city. Of course, we made minimum wage. The work got pretty hard sometimes, but what really rubbed me the wrong way was how on every major holiday, the entire mall we worked in would be completely dead except the movie theater.

Needless to say, I don't miss that job.

i take it you think you are making some kind of point here that goes against what i said? you fail at that though because that's like a 15% or greater increase over a typical state minimum wage, which is significant.

I think you're missing the larger point that minimum wage workers (let's say low-wage workers since you want to get semantic about it) deserve to make enough to live too.

Statistically how many of these retailers making low wages arent making enough to live?

I have to kind of agree. These grocery store stockers, cashiers, and deli people are putting their lives on the line right now. Should be compensated more. The grocery stores are seeing record income; spread the wealth to your employees.

no, i get that, and i completely agree. but when your argument for workers deserving to make a livable wage includes blatant exaggerations and falsehoods, you are not helping anything, you are just making your argument more faulty than it needs to be.

I'm still trying to figure out why you're still arguing semantics.

You do realize the term "minimum wage" has been the colloquial term to refer to lower wage workers in general, right?

Literally derailing a topic you agree with just to have this pointless argument.

no i'm pretty sure you just are assuming that's how it's been used when it really hasn't. when people mean to refer to low wage workers, they say low wage workers. minimum wage is a specific concept, not a generalized term.

i think the point people are trying to get across to you is they are talking about something different than what you are and don't give a shit about the section of the argument you're picking away at even now that that is obvious to you

I'm of the opinion that you should be paid based on the value you bring, not some arbitrary skillset you may or may not possess.

After all, that's how things worked before capitalism reared its ugly head and big corporations needed to come up with excuses for lowballing their employees.

Low skilled =/= not difficult.

Any asshole can flip a burger, but not everyone can handle customers or the sheer rush of the job.
