After talking to Impa and the scientist and fixing my sheikah slate, I've been running around the fields collecting bugs and killing monsters.

But wait, is the story... we straight up lost? We lost against Ganon? What the... we lost and Ganon's been terrorizing Hyrule for the past 100 years? That must be pretty demoralizing to hear for Link.

If we lost 100 years ago, I don't see what's so different now that we can actually win. What's changed.

From what I remember, Ganon hasn't personally been terrorizing Hyrule, but there are a bunch of his minions roaming around. His influence is still there, but that's about it. People are still living more-or-less normal lives, but they just can't roam too far away from the villages or towns without the possibility of getting ambushed by monsters (which might've always been a thing anyway, idk).

Ganon still took control of all the guardians and divine beasts and can probably do it again. They probably shouldn't have even bothered with that technology if it can turn against them like that...

its a nintendo game so dont think too hard about the story because nintendo certainly didnt.

ganon won because the champions were all too cocky and he took over the divine beasts, now this time you're going to win because you're going to break the beasts out of his control and everyone is going to reunite with the power of friendship or unity or some other dumb bullshit

I was able to finally find a memory to unlock (the one on the little hill that looks at the twin peaks to kakariko village, finally found it) and it's one of Zelda. In the one promotional video of the game I happened to see I caught a bit of Zelda talking and was mildly surprised at Nintendo implementing full voice acting. But of course it seems to be just for the occasional cutscene.

But wait, if Zelda is somewhere fighting Ganon then... that must mean all scenes featuring Zelda in those promos are just gonna be past scenes? We're not gonna see her until the end when we fight Ganon? ? If true how melancholic, it makes me want to rescue her all the faster.

Well they didn't know that at the time lol.

Anyway, I believe Impa mentioned that Zelda is holding Ganon back, and that's why not everything is destroyed. But there are tons of ruins of former settlements before the calamity. And of course his minions throughout the lands. Those areas closest to the castle are how everything would be if he got loose.

People are making the best of a bad situation.

I don't know, I feel like there's an air of melancholy to the game, being told by the spirit of the king of hyrule how they lost and told by impa that Link was actually struck down by ganon apparently, for some odd reason.

That being said I'm kinda proud of myself because on a whim I decided to see just how far I could make it to Ganon's Castle and I actually made it inside; was able to outrun the guardians and used up a couple of fairies. Even defeated some of those huge moblins and got some pretty epic gear, so much higher than my current weapons. Unfortunately I ended up in a locked tower where I had to defeat this centaur like beast to continue and he completely pulverized me. All in all a fun first try. I really can't wait to come back in like 50 hours and decimate everything in my path.

You could always go back every once in a while. As you probably know, you can beat the game at any time. But to get the "full ending", there is an additional requirement that'll be fulfilled by doing the main story quests.

Yeah I feel like this time there will probably be something I unlock to win.

But man seeing those temples really reminded me of previous games like ocarina of time and I got all nostalgic. Getting the 3 stones and putting them in the temple of time... and then seeing there's a temple in the great plateau! I can't remember if it said temple of time as well. Oh I hope there are cool references strewn throughout the game.

After getting my first memory I went to the closest divine beast location which turned out to be zora's domain, and learned of mipha. But I want to get shock arrows up the hill and saw a boss, the lynel, another centaur like creature. He also pretty much one-shots me, especially with those damn shock arrows. Am I supposed to defeat him? Am I supposed to sneak around to get those shock arrows stuck on trees? Because he hears like a bat even with a potion.

Was I supposed to go to zora's domain first, or did I miss a few missions to do beforehand.

I like the open world this game presents but I also kind of want a teensy bit of direction so I know what to do first, as in which is the easier one. And then work my way up.

I'm completely new to the game, having read/looked up nothing about it and only vaguely aware it was open world. Honestly, I was not prepared for how open. It's like they heard all the complaints of previous entries like twilight princess and skyward sword, then just went all out, designing the most dynamic and interactive world possible.

I mean, the fact that I can make use of even the tiniest cricket as a potion to restore my stamina, or cook chicken with an acorn to increase its health restorative power, is a first for a zelda game, and kind of awesome.

Oh, and it's so odd to not have to deal with either wallets, pouches, or even bottles to store fairies etc. And that bombs are infinite. That's kind of nice of them and removes a lot of the hassle, so now it's just needing more inventory for weapons, which I now know need korok seeds, though I can't find the giant korok after randomly coming across him in the hyrule overworld. Not too worried but I'm keeping it in the back of my mind in case I want to just google his location to give him seeds to increase my inventory. (but want to stay as spoiler free and fresh an experience as possible story wise)

He moves around but I think he eventually settles on one location after the first few times you bump into him. So don't get too confused if you went back to where he was and couldn't find him.

Lynels can be beaten early on, but they're meant to sort of be "late-game" enemies. For that specific one you should probably just sneak around and collect some of the arrows. You also might be able to run in, grab an arrow or 2, and run out. You might only need 1 arrow, but I'm not completely sure about that since it's been a long time since I played it.

They were used successfully against him long before the events of the memories, which is why they thought it would work again. There's a reason why it didn't work the 2nd time, which you'll find out.

IIRC there are three locations that giant Korok can be found, the third location being permanent. Just have to find him once more and he'll move to his permanent location. I'll just hint that he's near one of those stables.

Ah okay.

Yeah speaking of missing things, I am a little annoyed that the game doesn't have enough memory to save weapons that I drop. Sometimes I have a lot of weapons so I drop one to pick up another to break on an enemy and go back to my original weapon, only for it to have disappeared, and I didn't even go that far. Not a big deal but I dropped a level 16 sickle for a level 4 boko bat just so that I wouldn't "waste" the sickle on low level enemies.

It's definitely making reevaluate how I play the game. I instinctively like to fight every enemy I come across but now it's like "do I want to waste my weapon just for some horns and fangs? Nah"

Without spoiling anything, there are something like 3 or 4 places where specific weapons will respawn and a hidden weapons cache very close to a tower. If you can find these places, you'll always have access to a solid set of powerful weapons so it becomes less important to hoard.

Although yea, eventually you learn that it's best most of the time to avoid combat entirely rather than engage, since you get very little for it.

On the note of weapons, a neat little tip is that, if you find a useful weapon lying about, not in a chest or anything else, mark it on the map. Whenever a blood moon happens, not only do enemies respawn but also those weapons.

That being said, again it's amazing that this huge open world loads up in its entirety. On a little game cart. I can't imagine how much better it would be if it was exclusively designed for switch and not the previous console (though not sure how much difference in power/specs between switch and wii u)

Tbh it's usually worth doing. Monster parts are a useful resource, but if you hoard weapons you'll inevitably be replacing old ones you saved with better ones.

Another minor tip: the game actually keeps track of whether you looted all the chests in a shrine. If you scroll over a shrine and see a chest icon next to the name, you got all the treasure. If not, there's unopened chests in there.

Holy crap for real? That's definitely helpful thanks!

I've been making a habit of marking chests that contain weapons since it's like, why bother taking them when they're just gonna break, better to save them "in case" (but that "in case" never happens and if it does, I'm so far away from said chest that it'll probably remain unopened for the rest of the game)

Like this one time, I fought off a whole gang of bokoboblins only for the chest to contain a korok leaf. Um what, this thing literally falls from trees and what is it even used for.

But yeah I'm gonna mark those places that have spears lying around, usually near enemy encampments.

It's useful any time you need a breeze, like if you find a raft with a sail or want to push something down a hill.

Oh huh thanks! I've been putting a sword/weapon stamp near a shrine for that reason, so that I remember there's a cool weapon here that I don't want to take out yet which I can easily teleport back to at any time. Gonna check that feature for use later.

I assumed it would push a raft, but for some reason the raft wouldn't move when I tried doing it. There may have been wind going against the opposite direction so I guess I'll try again if the situation presents itself.

I know for sure it will push rafts, so either the raft was stuck on the shore or you stumbled onto a puzzle that requires some condition to stop the wind.
