I've seen Twitter posts from Italians saying stuff like, "Please take the virus seriously. It's REALLY bad over here! You have no idea what's coming!". And I've also seen stuff like, "America is about to become 3x as bad as Italy". This is pure fear mongering. Let's take a look at both sides. America has closed its restaurants, movies are closed, schools are closed, events are shut down, sports stadiums are shut down, etc. The problem with Italy, is that the virus was not caught early. In fact, it was circulating for a while. So by the time the virus was caught, it was too late, and it had already spread massively. Hence the fact that *60 million Italians* are in quarantine. This would be the fate of America if they had made the same mistakes are Italy, but fortunately that is not the case. There's even a whole article on why Italy is so affected by the virus.

Italians are saying, "Americans aren't taking it seriously". But I just don't see it.

It can cause serious disease but the panic about hoarding toilet paper is ridiculous.

the only difference between us and italy is that the us (mainly) has the baby version of the coronavirus. while italy has the more power strain of the virus

Id love to hear that too. Theyre shutting down my fucking state, we have 2 confirmed cases atm. People are getting put out of work. This response is very serious imo. They shut down the freakin NBA AND UFC.

Should I start with the dismissal of the outbreak as a politicized hoax, the constant reassurances that it won't reach our shores, won't be that bad, the blatant and dangerous racism it spurred due to its original epicenter, or just go straight towards people in the public eye - elected officials, even - telling people to go about business as usual, or denying that this virus actually exists?

People are hoarding supplies and in worst cases, encouraging each other not to keep each other safe, all in the name of "freedom". Disease doesn't give a fuck how free we think our society is or should be.

How dare people don't think that something will suddenly get bad.

And in all of that, congrats! You failed to answer how American is *making* mistakes (as in *presently). Oh that's right. They're not making mistakes; in fact, they've taken far more early precautions than Italy, which is why they won't suffer the same fate as them. You listed some poor "mistakes" that are really just a guise to bash Americans. Most of what you listed happens in every outbreak (denying, it won't be that bad, etc). The only difference, is that this time the virus at hand has gotten more serious.

Except we still arent testing for this so you cannot say we arent making mistakes. Population of Washington is 7.8 million. 10k people have been tested. They are still not testing people with symptoms unless they have had direct contact with someone else who has tested positive.

Lol people should be really fucking careful. I think we've already gone past the point of fear mongering and into actual fears. The numbers we have right now aren't even real. We do way too little testing and are following almost a graph for graph pattern on the rate of spread even despite the lack of complete information. Also young people dying is rare atm, but young people are also the ones who are getting the virus, shaking it off, and spreading it to older adults who do die from it.

But toilet paper hoarding is literally a meme. Toilet papers won't fucking save you at any point in this entire fiasco. Water bottle hoarding, maybe I can understand? In a situation like this though, the water supply is most likely to be the most well monitored. Most likely worse things will happen b4 we can't even drink water, but who's to say a standard water filter at most households can't do the job?

Where do you live? Restaurants and movies are shut down within miles and miles. Even movies like Trolls 2 are being released online, because the theaters have closed.

Grocery stores can't close they are essential. But they should be trying to limit customers in the stores at once as well as limit the number of certain items people buy right now.

This, most state officials have made it clear bars, restaurants, and theaters are closed with only take out or delivery for food an option for some bars or restaurants.

Nashville, restaurants are still open, bars closed within metro county but people were out in droves this weekend, movies just shut down
