This thing's been docked since I bought it and the one time I try it undocked the thing barely lasts.

Anyway it's actually not bad, playing with the joycon controllers attached to a tablet like device. Not as bad as I was expecting, relatively comfortable.

I still prefer it docked of course to a large TV screen. It's funny that it has low battery life because the pro controller seems to have a ton of battery life, especially compared to the ps4 controller.

Yeah, Switch has pretty low battery life. Apparently a newer model has a much longer battery life, and it's not the Lite version.

Yeah on a graphics intensive game you're only gonna get 3 hours or so max.

Switch is handheld mode is fucking abysmal.

I can't hold onto mine with the stock controller without getting handcramps.

I bought a Lite a few months ago but I kinda wish I had gotten the new model normal switch instead. Supposedly its battery is even better than the Lite

The newer Switch has nearly double the battery life. It's kind of crazy that Nintendo made no effort to advertise it.

The day I decided to get a switch, by sheer coincidence, happened to be the day the new Switch came out. I just woke up and decided that today was the day, shopped online for one, and then saw there was a better battery life one out.Never heard of it until that point.

Had to go far out to get it and 3 different stores but I found one. Thing lasts forever in handheld mode

Reminds me of back in the day when Gameboy (original) had dece battery life but the Sega Game Gear ate batteries like a mofo.

Not sure how the Vita/3DS (or whatever they've got out now) performs, but I feel like we'll never have great battery life with current gen games on the go.

Even the Vita had more battery life than the Switch, but yeah that's because the Switch is more intensive. The more advanced the technology the less likely battery life will catch up, something has to be sacrificed I guess.

Which one is this? I know there's a switch and a lite that has the joycons attached to the console.

There are 3 switch models now

Launch switch with detachable joycons
A newer model with detachable joy cons that has the best battery

And the lite handheld. That's the one I have
I might buy a new model normal switch eventually though

Turning the brightness down even marginally will greatly improve the battery life.

They brought up the GameGear in a watchmojo video and cited its abysmal "four hour" battery life.

Those people had clearly never played a GameGear. It was more like half an hour.

How to tell which is the new switch model? Or is this just something they quietly upgraded in every store, to become the default Switch?

It was a quiet upgrade but the new model has a different serial number on the box, I believe.

Tries to remember what the box of the switch I bought was.

I feel like it has to be new (i bought Jan of this year) but I rarely use it of the dock.

I mostly use my Switch in handheld mode, just because I prefer to play the games in the background of doing something else (watching something, etc).

I ended up buying one of those 10,000 mAh battery pack cases for it, and it is a nice, quality of life improvement. Turns my 2-3 hours of battery life into about 9-10 hours before having to recharge the whole thing (been playing BotW most lately, and I'd say that's one of the most demanding games on the system in handheld mode). Worth the $40 I spent on it.

I'm a little annoyed since I only just bought the Switch and didn't even play any games on it until now. But if battery life is the only difference, then I'm not missing much.

Sometimes Nintendo are pretty terrible when they do an "upgraded" version of a console. Well at least with the Wii they were (removing all gc backwards compatibility) and the Switch Lite not having detachable joycons
