Coronavirus Cases: 155,825
Deaths 5,814
Recovered 74,279

Major updates:

-Trump declared a national emergency on Friday and introduced some relief measures to help such as more testing, $50 billion in federal funds for states, paid sick leave for employees in businesses less than 50 employees and delayed federal student loan interest.
-Stocks rebounded after Trump's address.
-The Louisiana Primary has been postponed from April 4th to June 20th.
-Canada's PM, Justin Trudeau, and his wife, Sophie Trudeau, went into self quarantine after it was confirmed his wife was positive.
-Brazil's president, Jair Bolsonaro, tested positive, but then it was stated that the second test was negative.
-Several more athletes, celebrities and public figures around the world have tested positive.
-Trump's European travel ban into the US has been extended to the UK and Ireland.
-Spain declared a state of emergency. Cases have quickly climbed to 5,700 cases after a very lax initial response to the virus. Now the second highest number of cases in any European country after Italy. The entire country is about to go into lockdown.
-Italy lost 250 more people and added 2500 more cases in about 24 hours since Thursday. The healthcare system there is completely overwhelmed.
-More cancelations, delays and closures around the whole planet. Several more states and countries declared a state of emergency.
-Temperatures are starting to be monitored at the White House. Trump has taken the test and awaiting results.
-WHO stated Its a false hope to say, yes, that it will disappear like the flu. in relation to COVID-19 disappearing in the summer.
-A kid tested positive after he got an autograph from the Utah Jazz player, Rudy Gobert, who was recently confirmed positive.
-UK's PM, Boris Johnson, refuses to close schools or prohibit large gatherings because they want a "herd immunity" to form in the community, which would require 60% of the country being infected.
-Governor of NY, Andrew Cuomo, and NYC's mayor, Bill de Blasio, are standing firm on keeping K-12 schools open because of several complex reasons and the fear that it will lead to closing for the entirety of 2020. The CDC stated that short term school closings don't help much and it has to be long term in the 8-20 week range for impact. Nonetheless, attendance has plummeted from the daily average of 92% to 68% as of Friday.
--France's PM, Edouard Philippe, said that starting at midnight tonight all restaurants, bars, retail stores, cinemas, and gathering places will be closed. Food stores & pharmacies will be open. This is because the number of people on respirators is rising dramatically.

Previous updates.

the news cycle on this is somewhat slowing down. i remember there being a point last week where there was breaking news every hour or so

i guess it's because i'm in europe and most countries here are moving towards a lockdown. it's still early days for the US so i guess the announcements and news alerts will start again in the next week or so

This is so fucking insane and it's worth noting that the guy who is effectively running the UK (Boris Johnson is pretty much a puppet and mouthpiece) is heavily into eugenics and "darwinism".

more insight into going for herd immunity approach:
Hundreds of members of the scientific community have sent two open letters to the British government, voicing their concerns about the response to the coronavirus outbreak.

One comes from 198 academics in the field of maths and science, calling for urgent measures of social distancing across the UK.

It says: Going for herd immunity at this point does not seem a viable option, as this will put NHS at an even stronger level of stress, risking many more lives than necessary.

Yeah I'm not even sure the term here immunity makes sense here. And it makes no sense to suggest they need to flatten the curve at the 'peak' in 12 weeks if they are doing nothing to prevent it spreading en masse immediately.

No, deliveries without contact are just as infective, coz the infection contact are the boxes, the food, the money.

Fun fact, the thing apparently mutates and reinfects, so no, herd immunity is unlikely.

Only testing people who are in risk, only treating people younger than 50 (?) years old.

Malfunction posted...

It won't be annual or seasonal coz if you don't stop the infection chain the infections keep growing.
It might became a full year every year thing coz human contacts continue and stronger sunshine/temperatures only reduce the spread coz smear infections stop (sunlight killing em on the objects in the sun?)

yeah that's my biggest problem with it. if anything it'll make the peak come earlier and then they won't be able to control or flatten it out since it'll be too late

You should really set this with the whole article instead of bullshit fear mongering, because it's still completely unknown at this point. The only confirmed trait it has right now is that it takes advantage of colder weather, just like many other viruses.

Why is it fear mongering? It says exactly what they said. They don't know and to not have false hope. They're not saying it's 100%. Just that you shouldn't put too much faith in hoping for that because a lot of people are going "yeah, it'll be gone by the summer".

I'm going to my nephew's birthday party at a bowling alley/arcade in like an hour, and I am a tiny bit anxious. There's only been one confirmed case in the town it's in (Springfield, MO), but I suspect that there will be way more soon.

I don't plan to bowl or anything, but it does seem like a pretty dicey place to visit right now.

Trying to avoid work the most. If they need to cut hours, I offer to go, if a day needs to be pulled from my week I accept. It sucks but I live with people who are at are higher risk than most, which this virus seems to be really hurting right now. If worse comes to worse and I get sick, I'll rent out a hotel room for them so I can ride out my illness.

I don't have much to avoid. Due to hot iit gets sometimes here (in Vegas), I'm used to doing everything in the morning and where's hardly anyone there at that time. I'm avoiding grocery stores for the next 2 or 3 days until the crowds die down. Other than that, it's business as usual for me.

imo a 2 week shutdown should be enough to end this corona thing. You get symptoms 2-14 days after infection right? If after 2 weeks you are infected, congrats, you get to stay home. If you're fine, then you're free to go about your business. Although maybe it'll have to be extended to two and a half weeks to account for people getting infected today
