Example: Snake in MGS2.

I saw a movie earlier today called The Hunt that probably have my favorite example of this: After the cold opening, the movie follows Emma Roberts who is presented like the typical main character movie girl until she gets head sniped, like, 5 minutes in. and it switches the perspective to a couple of other characters until they too are picked off shortly afterwards. lol

the movie Feast

the movie introduced a bunch of characters in a bar and they all get a title card telling you a bit about them and their chances of survival. the monsters show up and a guy shows up and his title card says "hero" and his chances of survival are listed as "pretty fucking good" he gets his head ripped off 3 minutes after showing up and his wife is introduced immediately after as "heroine" with her special skills being

tote shotgun
gun ass
save day

her chances of survival were "hopefully better than the heroes"

she makes it over half way through the movie before also getting killed off and a side character gets to step up and she gets a second title card listing her as "heroine number 2" with her chances of survival being "lets just hope for the best this time"

The decoy protagonist was so well loved to the point that he was around for less than a 3rd of the series and he's not only a lot of people's favorite character in the series, but most of anime period.

Also shit, this is a hard topic to cover. Just mentioning the series is prolly a spoiler since there's only but so many protagonists in a series. ._.

a part of me wishes kamina didn't die but he had to for Simon to develop
