The worst of it hasn't even hit yet, and we have:

-Numerous major events being canceled.
-Businesses in danger already.
-The stock market in free fall.
-A huge upswing in racism.
-The virus dominating discussion in the news, in person, and online.
-Hoarding and scalping of supplies.
-Travel bans.
-Trouble distributing testing kits.
-Insurance companies showing their asses and trying to get out of covering patients for treatments relating to the virus.

It's genuinely fascinating just how hard and fast society was shaken by this. It honestly makes me wonder just how hard a more deadly event than this would hit. Not to downplay the effects of the virus by any means, especially among the elderly, but the vast majority of people who get the disease should be fine. If an even more deadly disease were to spread to similar degrees, it's kind of scary to think of just what might happen.

Perhaps I'm making light of the situation a bit too much, but just stepping back and look at how this is impacting society at large, it is honestly really interesting. It's tough to think of many events that have impacted things this much and this quickly.

The reason events are being canceled isnt because of how bad things are, its to prevent them from getting to that point. Those actions, however, have the effect of making people more scared.

This is just the way things really are. We're a society of pretenders. We like to pretend that we're so far advanced from the days of old that we could never go back, but then something like this hits and everything starts to unravel. Everyone starts to turn on each other. Trust is shattered, community is broken. Doors close. Windows lock. Faith is lost.

Look at this mess. And it's not even that bad. Like you said, TC... what if something worse had happened? What would it look like then? Anarchy. Anarchy isn't as cool as the edgelords of CE want you to believe.

I live in a really small town in Missouri, and supplies were already kind of low yesterday, with toilet paper being totally gone.

A case was confirmed very close to here shortly after that, too. I'd hate to even try to go shopping today.

Honestly, not to diminish the seriousness of the situation, but it is interesting to experience. I've never been through anything quite like all of this. Like I said, though, it is concerning to think that how things would go with an even worse situation.

It's gonna be awful. Yesterday the governor announced a state-wide closure of schools because of there being like 10 cases found so far, and the shelves for perishables were just outright empty and checkout lines stretched for forever most of the day.

Southeast Coasters are fairly used to shutdowns and panic-buying due to hurricanes, but not for what I assume will be the length of time necessary to get the coronavirus under control (unless you've been unlucky enough to get a direct hit from a major 'cane).

Don't people there freak out over snow storms and blizzards?

Anyway I was lucky and found toilet paper and bought a couple of packages.

Also bought two 24pks of beer and some food.

Maybe it will last a week.

Don't know about next month or next year.

Soon production and transport of many things will stop because either they'll get locked down or the people who make and transport things will be dead and gone.

Nah, we don't get a ton of snow here. We rarely get a big storm or something, but it has never been this bad.

The worst I can remember is an ice storm from several years ago. Power lines froze over and broke, leaving several people without power in very cold temperatures for days if not weeks. That definitely got pretty bad, but I don't think the sheer hysteria hit the levels of what we're seeing now.

Oh, and we also regularly get tornadoes, but nobody really cares about those most of the time. They're such a regular occurrence that most people just kind of watch them for a bit without really worrying unless it's a special situation, like a big one hitting a town directly, such as with Joplin a number of years ago.
