Its main claims to fame - all of the dark, jumpscare-filled, meta stuff and the borderline ARG it had going with all of the hidden content in the files - are by no means unique or particularly clever. It was basically just a flavor-of-the-month sort of game: if it hadn't become randomly super popular, there wouldn't be reason to talk about it, any more than any other of the games of its type. Not that I didn't like it though. It was quite the experience in the moment, and I still find that content and such fairly interesting. But calling it "genius" is giving the game far far too much credit. [LFAQs-redacted-quote] I only played a bit of that, but it seemed pretty well written. I wanna continue it one day. It's hard to criticize between it and others because DDLC is free and compact, but most VNs are like 30+ hours that are just as good as DDLC and reaches a much higher peak due to longer running times and deeper, better developed plot. But technically, DDLC is either up there or the best.
