I'll never forget the days of:

  • Message boards like here on GameFAQs
  • Flash games
  • MMOs like vanilla WoW
  • multiplayer games that never took themselves too seriously like Halo
  • Hangouts like Habbo and Gaia Online where you gain currency by socialising and creating your avatar
  • YouTube Poop ffs
Those days are long gone. Net Neutrality being abolished in the US and Article 13 in Europe definitely don't help. The overly political and toxic Reddit as well as grandma's Facebook is the only place to hang out. Competitive gaming has become tryhard.

And being hard of hearing myself, I ESPECIALLY dislike that all information and guidance is going to YouTube audio-gated. It really saddens me that soon audio will be more important than text when I can't hear it.

The only positive of the internet these days is Discord, indie games and the variety of porn on the current web. Now its just a cesspool of sweaties and narcissism...

PSO2 is coming to the XBONE. I've never played it, but given its age, it might be just what you're looking for. I'm interested myself actually.

Aren't those sites still a thing? I'm way past the age demographic for online socializing outside of Discord, light Reddit, and here. But I think those kinds of things still exist in some form.

I'll agree with you that the internet does seem less free and more commercial these days (I still remember when you could see video of in reviews of movies and TV instead of just still images on Youtube), but part of it might just be longing for the good ol' days.

Can't play PSO2 in my country so no.
Phone games are absolute cancerous garbage besides a select few.

MMOs back then had a lot of issues though, and it wasn't just the P2W model.

Nowadays alot of them have died off.

Which is a shame because I think nobody managed to archive those games.
