this. please progress the game naturally.

tl;dr of defender set is capcom provide OP weapon and armor set for players who want to jump to iceborne content by making the base game a breeze.

please don't do that. you might beat the base game monster easy, but you will lose on important player skills, such as weapon familiarity, monster familiarity and tbh it takes all the fun out of progress.

Ever play monster Hunter? If not experiment with all weapons until you find one that clicks and grab every plant and mine every rock you come across just to have the materials you might eventually need in the future. Combat won't "click" for hours so don't give up. Go into every quest with full potions and always eat before any quest

Thanks! I had no idea that Defender set was a thing and it sounds like it defeats the purpose of playing a game like this.

I really need to give this game another try. I gave up because the combat made no sense.

Dont listion to players telling you to ignore the defender set. Similar to pokemon the real game doeasnt start until endgame where you can finally begin farming the necessary gear and decorations to optimize your builds.

Monster Hunter is definitely not similar to Pokemon in that you actually have to fight monsters yourself, learn attack patterns, learn telegraphs to dodge crazy attacks, etc. Using gear that makes you not really have to care about that stuff until you hit Iceborne can definitely affect how well somebody learns the game.

As someone who only played the main game but got 180 hours out of it before getting to the credits, it breaks my heart that some people are just gonna fly through that experience lol. Granted, I got up that high through backtracking to help friends progress. But that's all part of it. If they would of had a boost, it wouldn't as been as fun or needed. A lot of the time Id even use weaker equipment, just to keep me from doing all the work for them.

And the game does NOT start at the end game. This isnt an MMORPG. The entire game is fun, story and all.

The game doesn't explain a many of the mechanics very well so be patient. It's never a bad a idea to explore each new map pretty thoroughly. Mining rocks, collecting fossils, harvesting plants and picking up tracks.

Don't get too attached to your armor. Especially low rank. Bone armor is pretty easy to make has some good base skills and gives you a resistance to fire. Probably a good start. You'll replace you armor several times over before you are done.

Combat is something that will always require active attention and will be frustrating at first as you learn the movesets of the weapons and monster attack patterns. Losing is part of the game. It will happen. A lot. Just try to learn from it.

Hunting is about knowledge and preparation. Remember to always bring 10 potions (later mega potions when you have a supply of them). Always eat at the canteen before you go on a hunt. At first just get the chef's choice meal. As you go on you can start eating for specific skills but that's a ways off. If you know a monster likes to poison, bring antidotes. If you are struggling with specific elements, wear armor that resist it. If something likes to be airborn, bring flash pods.

nonononono

use charge blade

big brain weapon with explody payoff.

the most versatile weapon, easy to learn, hard to master.

you can:

-deal elemental damage
-stun monster
-cut tail
-defend
-counter
-boom boom
-good range

no other weapon in the game can over this at the same time

You can still learn this all with or without op gear. Heck I'd argue it's even better for doing so when you arent healing every other atk.

That and the only monsters you're need any real skill to fight are all endgame anyways, and also are the only ones you're be farming infinitely so you're have plenty of opportunity and time to practice by then.

Oh yeah, that's an important tip. I recall honey for making mega potions and flash bugs for flash pods being the biggest help when the game came out.

THATS what happened to me originally. Had mhtri on the Wii and thought it was trash and put it off for like 8 months. Had nothing else to play and said I would give it a fair shot. About 5 hunts in it finally clicked and is now one of my favorite series

Yeah, honey, flash bugs, bitter bugs, and blue mushrooms are probably the key to initially focus on. And it won't seem super meaningful at first because like 4 bugs a mission doesn't feel like much but eventually that gets upgraded until you are getting like 30 of something in a single mission.
