idk if thats the right word but what I mean is it actually said some real shit about mental health issues (even if in a sort of ham-handed fashion) that I deal with and that was cool to see in a big movie.

I hated it because of the way it dealt with mental health issues, as someone who has been seriously mentally ill most of my life I felt it was exploiting mental illness.

Interesting. I enjoyed it on a pure, visceral level. It satisfied something in me. I think most entertainment is exploitative.

I think you mean that it is walking a fine line between taking the characters mental health issue seriously and also indulging in the fantasy that it makes him sympathetic or commendable. He is ultimately the Joker, infamous Batman villain with basically no redemption. Interesting movie, but somewhat hard to reconcile exactly how the movie should be viewed. I think it does a good job of pushing lots of grey issues and not really resolving anything, which is fine, to me, for a character study movie.

This is why Joker will never ever ever ever ever ever be discussed in a serious manner.

I blame society for that.

Blame the people who literally thinks Joker is some deep character that is relatable.

I dont think the line was that fine tbh. Pretty classic anti hero imo. All the characters he killed were completely awful people. Guys harrassing a woman on the train and then beating the fuck out of him. Mother who lied to him his entire life. Coworker who betrayed the absolute fuck out of him. TV host who had him on his show to make fun of him.

It doesn't. More people needs to realize this.

He is, though. Sure, he's being used as fodder by kids who take those "we live in a society" jokes seriously, but his representation of mental illness is spot on.

In theatre, sure. Remember, its not a documentary.

Id also argue that even IRL he had a right to defend himself against those dudes who were stomping the fuck out of him on the train. He wouldnt have needed to shoot them IRL of course, as I believe they backed the fuck up as soon as he pulled the gun out IIRC.

But again, it was a drama, not real life. So the deaths of shithead characters felt pretty satisfying.
