Mostly, it's a giant grind and waste of time.

Excalibur is a great starting Warframe.
You can get premium currency by trading with other players. You'll start getting relic items which can be traded as is or opened in missions for better items, and you can make a lot by trading them.
You should probably use the starting premium money you get to buy an extra warframe slot or weapon slots.
You can go into the in game market and besides premium stuff, you can buy weapon blueprints for regular in game money, then build them with items you find during missions. I highly recommend getting the blueprint for the Hek shotgun at some point, because you can get it pretty early and it remains really powerful until late game when you can actually make better weapon builds.
You get items called Orokin Reactors and Catalysts. They double the amount of mod slots on a Warframe or weapon. You get a couple free throughout the story, and you can occasionally get them from daily missions, or buy them for premium currency. They'll be rare at first, so use them on something good. The Hek is a good candidate.

It's really entertaining, it's impressive what they've done with it but it is kind of formulaic and grindy at the same time.

I mean, I wouldn't have spent so much time on it if it wasn't fun, but I played a lot of it with some good friends. At some point it just became too repetitive.
