just by the virtue of their weight and 'extra' layer of XXL defense? i mean there is 200 Lb guy of pure muscles and there is 500 Lb guy of pure muscle AND walrus level fat that makes them hard to grapple and they probably absorb the impacts.

A few rikishi have transitioned to MMA, but they did poorly. The thing is, they were also training and trying to fight in the MMA way.

That being said, for the ridiculous amount of damage rikishi accrue, they don't have the end goal of hurting their opponents. Most damage comes from having to fall from a raised platform with no cushioning, and the tachiai, where they slam their skulls into each other at full force half the time.

I can't say that they're forced to lose weight cause it's not common enough to say. The most known example is probably Akebono. He lost weight just as a matter of transitioning, but he was still clearly a former rikishi.
