I'm going to preface this by saying I'm speaking in generalizations. Obviously black people do not all vote exactly the same. Many individuals do not follow this pattern. But this is how, statistically, they tend to vote overall.

Black voters have always been, overall, very pragmatic and very risk averse. They don't just vote for whoever they like. This is something white people frequently don't seem to understand. I guess it's because for them, no matter who wins they know they'll be fine in the end. But black people worry a lot more about what will happen to them if the government becomes more and more dominated by republicans (with good cause if you ask me). They are always thinking, who has the best chances of winning the general election?

In 2008 Clinton had much better support among black people than Obama. But when Obama swept in Iowa, they saw that Obama could actually win with white people and they finally got excited over him.

Similarly, there are plenty of black people who like Bernie but are not sold on his ability to win over in the general election. This is the number one reason he has failed to get much support from them. Make no mistake, if he does somehow manage to get the nomination then black people will rally behind him and vote. But for the time being, they're going with the candidate they think is safer.

The number one reason he failed to get support among black people is that they're much more politically conservative than the rest of the Democratic base (primarily the older generation, AKA the actual people who vote). They were never going to be jumping for the chance to vote for an actual leftist.
