us having free will is questionable, anyway. imo the real reason why it isn't so romantic because if someone misses out on their soulmate or they pass away or something, it means no one else can live up to them and they'll never be as happy with someone else than they were with the soulmate. That's stupid and depressing, not romantic.

Believing in spirtual soulmates is a gateway to obsession. You'll be bound to do way more wreckless shit if you're in the belief that one person holds all your happiness. I believe in soulmates on the level that there's people out there that will click together with you like a puzzle piece. But there's far more than one of those out there.

Because when my self destructive behavior inevitably burns whatever current relationship I'm in into the ground, I can shrug it off and say "she just wasn't the one" and carry on without having to self reflect or try and better myself

Soul Mate doesn't have to mean someone was divinely created specifically for you. it just means you found someone who you are able to connect with on a deeper level and want to spend the rest of your time with...so you call them your soul mate.
