Maybe a little bit that I know people with little kids who would be at risk if they got infected, or for the older people I know. Typically those are the two groups who are most likely to die from these types of epidemics. But not for myself, personally.

no, i'm not old or already sick, so even in the unlikely event i catch it, it's not going to kill me.

what isn't helping is newspapers spreading hysteria, by calling it a killer virus, despite the percentage of deaths by infected people still being in the single digits, and those are, again, mostly sick or old people.

A lil bit. One of the people I hang with recently came down with Nausea. Large coughing fits too. He's been throwing up for a few days now. He probably has a fever of some sort. Not saying it's the new virus but suspicions are high at this kind of time is all lol.

I think it'll lead to a lockdown here in America for some period of time at least. Good amount of us will live though. I don't think it'll lead to some post apocalyptic world like 4chan hypes it up to be.

Apparently it's real bad in Italy and they've been leakin.

I'm not worried about it as much as I'm worried about people who are losing their shit over it.
People rioting because they can't buy useless face masks, and fucking the economy up, is way scarier to me than having the flu for a week.

Same here dude. My wife and I booked a trip to Japan at the end of April for our honeymoon. I've been waiting my entire life to get to visit Japan, but now we're thinking of postponing it til later in the year.

I'm not worried about catching it there, but I also don't want to risk paying $2000 for a trip where everything is closed and I can't really enjoy myself for 2 weeks.

Not so much about the virus itself -- more about the disruption and inconvenience caused by the official and public responses to it: hospital appointments cancelled, health centres closed, panic buying, etc. I'm not saying those responses are wrong, because it does need to be contained, managed, and prepared for; but they could definitely make life difficult.

Somewhat. I have stage iv colon cancer, and so an infection is likely to be potentially more lethal than for healthy people that get infected. However, I also have medicaid and am treated at one of the best hospitals in the country. That said, it's also a very populated and trafficked hospital, so...

So what is your point?

the point is that even if you do get it you are significantly less likely to die than from other viruses from the past. thought that was obvious.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-flu-h1n1-pandemic/swine-flu-infected-1-in-5-death-rate-low-study-shows-idUSBRE90O0T720130125
At least one in five people worldwide were infected with swine flu during the first year of the 2009-2010 H1N1 pandemic, an international research group said on Friday, but the death rate was just 0.02 percent.

ebola and sars are totally different types of diseases so yeah their mortality rate is pretty high (although not as many people actually caught it). bird flu I was pretty surprised how high it was (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_mortality_from_H5N1 wikipedia lol)
While estimates of case-fatality (CF) rates for past influenza pandemics have ranged from about 0.1% (1957 and 1968 pandemics) to 20% (1918 pandemic); the official World Health Organization estimate for the current outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza to date is around 60%. While the real H5N1 CF rate (what it would be if we had perfect knowledge) could be lower (one study suggests that the real H5N1 CF rate is closer to 1433%)

but it seems it's also pretty rare since it doeese't transmit well between people or something?

I see estimates for the coronavirus at like 2%-5% but I imagine it's too early to really get a good picture of the situation

Amazing how many are being so wilfully ignorant about this.

I watch updates about it during NHK newsline every single morning before I go to work.

I also just choose to go on with my fucking daily life and not participate in the OH GOD THE WORLD IS ENDING circlejerk that people love to spin up every few months. Remember when World War 3 was supposed to happen last year because of Iran? Remember when ebola was going to kill everyone? Remember when North Korea and Donald Trump were going to go create glorious hellfire nuclear war?

There's better, more constructive things to do with your time and attention than to perpetually obsess over bad news on a daily basis.

Yes, I am concerned. This shit has passed the bar of SARS in 2003 or H1N1, we are into pandemic territory. This is like something out of a Tom Clancy novel. It can incubate for 14 days, cause lung damage, heart damage, ball damage, and can leave you infectious for weeks after being "cured". It also can reinfect and is airborne and fecal transmissible, so you could catch the virus if someone farts.

I am stopping at the store to buy a mask and gloves and nonperishable goods. I will also probably buy a box of ammo and basic first aid supplies. I might have to seal myself in my house for weeks.

Also, if you judge the personal risk to yourself to be low, is that sufficient grounds to shrug it off as a public health threat?

I'm probably healthy enough to survive it myself if I caught it. But there are people I care about who might not be. And there are definitely people whom I don't know who certainly aren't. Even if I don't know them, I still want them to be protected.

Used to be, but decided there wasn't very much reason I should be stressed over something I can't do anything about, especially since it hasn't reached North America in any reasonable way.

With both C2E2 and Pax East this weekend, I feel like it will be peak time for it to spread. A couple hundred thousand people crammed into those two conventions, then returning to all parts of the nation, all it takes is one infected and we are seeing it at all corners by March.
