...to not have your hand held, and have to figure stuff out for yourself?

Last couple of games I played - Hollow Knight and Witch Hunt. There's no pointing arrow or flashing waypoint, no autosaves and regular checkpoints, quests are hidden behind vague journal hints. Progress is lost if you fuck up.

Bit of a rude awakening.
