It's always been a fascinating corner of the globe to me due to it's tumultuous history from it's weird partitioning.
plus their accent is astonishingly entertaining, I just wonder how it figures into the political culture of the two nations.

I'm British with an Irish step family. I think it should be part of the republic, Unionists are scum and the UK government and armed forces have treated the Irish horribly although it's somewhat better now.

It only doesn't want to be because it's occupied by Unionists

So it only wants to be part of the UK, because most of the people living there want it to be part of the UK?

"They only think this because it's occupied by people who think it."

So, it being part of the UK isn't a good solution.
It being part of Ireland isn't a good solution.

What if it went independent?
Separate from both

That would be a terrible terrible terrilble idea

1. The people who live there don't want it.

2. It would lose all the trade deals, laws, protection and money it gets from being the UK. It would cripple it's economy and military to the point of making the entire nation a bad joke.

3. It would have to erect a hard boarder not only from Ireland but also strict boarder controls for England/Scotland/Wales as well which would be a nightmare.

4. It would have to negoicate new trade deals and laws with the EU From a bargining position of absolutely nothing. It would get fucked over so hard. And even if they tried to join the EU and the EU let them join that would still take years.

This isn't California. It's not even potentially self-sustaining on a global developed scale.

Why does it have to be a Hard Border?
Those other points, i'm not gonna argue, but this one seems optional.

Sure, they're not part of the EU, but neither is Norway and their border with Sweden is barely enforced at all except for special circumstances

Ireland is in the EU. The Independant Northern Ireland isn't. Even if it tried to join it won't be for years.

They would have to have a border between the nations and without the UK, it would have to be a hard border armed with military forces for basic security measures

Why does Mexico have to have a hard border with The US and Guatemala?

Same reasons.

i don't have much of an opinion on northern ireland specifically but i do love ireland and irish people.

also "no irish, no blacks" was unfortunately a thing here in the past so there's somewhat of a shared bond i guess

Norway and Sweden are different nations with different histories.

There is no warfare, terrorism, economic gain, military risk, illegal drug/child smugging going on there.

Northern Ireland would be a hotbed for it, even as part of the UK. Let alone without it. We have people in this topic alone low key implying they want to remove the population who is against reunification.

I think Northern Ireland's political future should be decided by the people of Northern Ireland -- whatever that decision may be.

I'm still not sure I can forgive the IRA for that missed chance in Brighton in 1984.
