Is this my excuse to finally buy a gas mask? Or is this just a couple cases of powdered peanut butter and water scenario?

Unless you're going to cloister yourself in your house, there's not really much you can do outside of regular flu/cold prevention protocol that most people don't follow anyway. Practice good hygiene, wash your hands regularly and thoroughly, avoid people who are coughing/sneezing and the surfaces they come into contact with, don't touch your face/eyes without washing your hands, just common sense stuff. If you suspect someone is sick, don't overreact but don't take it lightly, either. Get some respirators if you want.

As for things to stock up on, food and water are a good start but also consider things like toothpaste, shampoo, paper towels, toilet paper, and other household items like that. If we end up in circumstances with curfews, shutdowns, and roadblocks, you don't want to be caught without something you'd otherwise make a quick trip to the pharmacy to pick up or have same day delivered by Amazon. Bleach and gloves would be a good thing to have on hand if you need to sanitize stuff.

with something as contagious as this its highly likely you are going to catch it anyway unless you live off grid and dont have a lot of interactions with people. hopefully before that point comes they will have a vaccine to help with it. with that id stock up on supplys that will help boost your immune system and fight the virus. multivitamins like C, B6, E ect. and try to stay active and as healthy as you can.

as far as stuff to stock up on to help delay that outcome- soap, hand sanitizer (alcohol, NOT the gel), face masks (n95, n100, you can go full respirator if you have the money, but dont forget a good supply air filters), plastic gloves and feet covers, bleach, disinfectant wipes and in general most other stuff youd get for sanitation.

however with something as large as this id also recommend stock piling general supplys in prep for potential panic buying especially with the stock market going crazy. stuff that you can survive on if you couldnt make it to the store or even get out of your home for that time (like getting locked in against your will) or if the stores sell out. lots of water, good amount of food (canned and freeze dried and in general stuff that will typically last a few years just siting around). dont get stuff thats going to spoil in a week. general hygiene stuff like toilet paper(!), paper towels, tooth paste, first aid supplys along with all the sanitation stuff mentioned above. basically anything you feel you need to use in your daily life id stock pile it hard now while you can.

if you have the money look into setting up a bug out bag. make sure you have a way to charge your cell phone and other electronics if the power goes out (solar chargers) and make sure if you drive that your tank is topped off as much as you can (even setting aside some gas just in case. gas will last 6-12months, remember to change it out).
