TVTropes' avid userbase is a dangerous example of how superficial one can become in terms of digesting storytelling. In a lot of ways, it's the antithesis of understanding a narrative. I was inspired to make this topic by watching Aliens yesterday. Oh it was "just" another heroes journey so it's not worth reading. I do love reading tropes and being like "oh yeah that guy was totally the Dragon" or whatever but it shouldn't decide whether you liked something or not for you.... especially if you haven't read it. Again, neither really take away from those films (and yes I have seen them). Also I have actually seen Suicide Squad and hated it. Early DCEU is still a trainwreck I can't look away from. Almost want to actually watch the films just to see if they're really that bad. I enjoy TV Tropes for the entertainment value from time to time but yeah it's not like I ever feel like I learn anything by reading it, especially for media I haven't personally consumed. I agree completely. A lot of the tropes seem pretty arbitrary and not particularly useful.
