Just wanted to discuss this. Browsing TV Tropes, Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad strike me as especially egregious cases for big-studio films.

Sure Kyle, just carry ignoring the fact that the 'charity' you work for isn't even trying to hide how obviously evil they are and keep getting your allies killed to help the warlord you somehow still believe you're opposing.

I'm referring to LMS in particular who seems to play or watch very little of anything and just talks about stuff he's read on TVTropes rather than get any actual firsthand experience with any sort of media

My comment was directed at Leonhart for the record. TVTropes' avid userbase is a dangerous example of how superficial one can become in terms of digesting storytelling. In a lot of ways, it's the antithesis of understanding a narrative. By only recognizing patterns, you kind of are doomed to miss the nuance of anything.

That's a very good point admittedly.

With video games, I just find it hard to commit somehow. I tend to lose interest before finishing.

I was inspired to make this topic by watching Aliens yesterday. Even though it's my favorite movie of all time, I feel as if Hicks, Ripley, and Newt are the only characters in the film who act remotely sensibly, though the idiocy is fairly believable so it doesn't hurt the movie much if at all.

I seriously love TV tropes. Every time I watch a new show or a movie or play a new game, I go straight to it afterwards. I just love trivia. But yeah, reading something I didn't know before and pretending I know everything about it is a bit absurd

Yeah, TV Tropes is good for games and show that you actively engage in. The trivia is nice and its especially good at catching little bits of foreshadowing, which I really love.

Great post on TV Tropes

I definitely agree there's way too much reliance on "Tropes" when discussing material - I often see people point to "well this book was just another heros journey:" without actually discussing the specifics of how the book executed that to see if it did it well or in an interesting way or not. Oh it was "just" another heroes journey so it's not worth reading.

I do love reading tropes and being like "oh yeah that guy was totally the Dragon" or whatever but it shouldn't decide whether you liked something or not for you.... especially if you haven't read it. It's always about how well that work executed the ideas its using.

I also realized recently how John Travolta's character in Pulp Fiction is a walking Idiot Ball, and how Marge Gunderson is the only competent character in Fargo. Again, neither really take away from those films (and yes I have seen them).

Also I have actually seen Suicide Squad and hated it. We could go on and on about the DCEU's failings, especially in light of ANOTHER flop, albeit one of lesser magnitude than Justice League.

Also I basically view Batman v. Superman as being almost objectively bad if it couldn't crack the billion-dollar mark at the box-office while a decently well-reviewed R-rated prestige drama about Batman's arch-nemesis could.

Early DCEU is still a trainwreck I can't look away from. Almost want to actually watch the films just to see if they're really that bad. Plus I view Man of Steel as the point where the debates around toxic fandom started, though it could just as easily be The Dark Knight Rises.

I agree completely.

A lot of the tropes seem pretty arbitrary and not particularly useful. It's not cinema sins levels of bad, but at times seems about as insightful.
