  • Enemies reacting to changes in the battlefield in Halo CE. Shoot an Elite and the Grunts will flail around in fear. Shoot down an Elite's shield and he will retreat and hide
  • Hit detection in Goldeneye/Perfect Dark. Shoot an enemy in the arm and he'll flinch in pain and react like he was shot in the arm
  • Environment noise and ground type making an impact on sneaking effectiveness in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. If you're on carpet with a loud fan in the room you will be able to zip around
What are some others?

i feel like rdr2 does this

here's one: fucking tapping on the walls or whistling in stealth games. feel like i havent seen that in a decade at least

Outside of Hitman and MGSV stealth mechanics have been extremely simplified for the most part. Nowadays the genre is more about giving options to also slaughter everyone.

Basically no modern roguelike even comes close to approaching how advanced older retro roguelikes are.

In Nethack you can polymorph yourself into a cockatrice, lay eggs, then throw the eggs at enemies to kill them, except that makes you depressed because you're killing your own babies so you get a malus for doing it.

That's not even the most fucking crazy shit in the game.

Auto battle in RPGs. That shit goes back to the 90's at least, in Breath of Fire 1 - most RPGs should at least have the option to put the battles on auto-pilot. There's no reason not to.

This goes doubly so for replayable RPGs with like branching paths or alternate endings. I'm playing through Final Fantasy X-2 for the second time (on PS3, I played the fuck out of this game on PS2) and it's a real slog. Finally going for that Mascot dressphere, but a lot of the shit I'm doing is getting real old. A basic-ass, rudimentary auto-battle system would be great - there's always the Berzerk status, but sometimes you've gotta drop out and heal, y'know.

Earthbound having an autobattle mechanic for enemies you are overlevelled for should be a no-brainer for most turn based RPGs.

Just let me turn off encounters. Breath of Fire, Pokemon, etc all had items to disable encounters. In Bravely Default I can just go to a menu and turn it off completely.

In Second Sight when you used a sniper rifle it would zoom in the right side of the screen and you could still see your character.

As far as I know it's the only game that does this.

I don't know any games since Chaos Theory that have used it in that depth. Maybe the odd thing like not sneaking on glass.

But Chaos Theory would even give you a meter that would let you know how loud you can be.

Nothing since has come close to Red Faction.

I would split screen with my buddy and we can literally dig a tunnel in the wall to hide in.

Or, we can make a gorge in the ground. It was astounding.
