Just waiting for my wife to finish Sword to get me Zacian, and I have to move my Melmetal/Meltan to home.

All legit. All Unown, all Vivillon/Deerling/Minior/everything except Alcremie...

Well I can't guarantee all the Vivillon are legit, but I traded for all.

At a minimum it's a copy of every single Pokemon. Some people are more specific and want every form variation and gender difference as well, and some people are insane and go for every shiny.
Getting every shiny makes more sense than having a living dex tbh. At least the game keeps track of how many different shinies you've had, and there is a specific number you can aim for that the game records; whereas a living dex is a purely mental thing. To be fair, I've never even heard of a living dex being a thing until I saw posts on this board about it.

I guess my comparison to this would be if a video game has medal awards for time trials in different challenges, completing a dex is like getting Gold, completing a shiny dex is like getting Platinum, and having a living dex is like...I dunno, saying you got a Gold, then tied your own Gold score exactly down to the tenth of a second...for some reason.

Living dex makes plenty of sense as a method to instantly fill the Pokedex in any new games via Bank/Home. Any old pokemon available in those games I have immediately available and I only have to focus on catching new Pokemon. Or when I restart Sword here in a bit to replay it with a team I bred I can immediately fully fill out the Dex and get the Shiny Charm super early to increase the chances of hitting a wild shiny on the replay.

There's definitely reasons to have one.

Yeah doing a living dex sucks, but it pays off for future generations.

Plus it looks really cool to scroll through your boxes and see all of your Pokemon

In gen 8/Pokemon Home, they (apparently) give you an original color Magearna (previously unobtainable in past games) for storing a complete 890 living dex in Home.

(I say apparently because there were some questions about the exact trigger for getting the gift, but it's like 99% confirmed at this point)

I do/did entirely agree with you in previous generations before they had this reward though.

Is this something I should already be getting? Because I have the 890 in Home but haven't gotten any new Magearna out of it.

For those of you who have big ass living dex's, if they release another Rattata , will you have to move 800 Pokemon all one by one to make room for him? Or did they think ahead and have different methods of moving them?

I simply don't stick my alternate forms together that way

my first 1-890 slots are all reserved for just one of each pokemon, then other boxes hold alt groupings, like a specific Unown box (which contains a dupe of the Pokemon I have in the livingdex slot 201), an Alola box, and a Galar box

There are ways to move them in chunks now, but I would just put alternate forms in a separate box.

Ah, it didn't cross my mind until this topic that the Alolan and Galarian forms share the same national dex number with normal ones since they're just forms...

Try shifting every box one to the left, then save and go into the app on mobile to check for the gift. If it's not there shift everything back and check again. Worked for me.

moving chunks really wouldn't fix the issue of singular insert messing your ordering since you'll still have to pop one off the end of each row and push it down to col1 of the next row

can only be done 1 row at a time too since you can't pop the end of a row unless the next row has freed space by shifting columns 1-5 over, which again can't be done unless that row has had its col6 popped off of it to give space for the 1-5 shift

so that means...
... 2 shifts per full row (every row but Box30Row4:899-890)
... 5 full rows per full box (every box but Box30 which has 3 full rows & the 1 short above)
... 29 full boxes in a livingdex, plus Box30

Worst Case: insert Alola Ratatta (#019b into Box1Row4Col2)
... Shift Tail Row (Box30Row4, 1 operation)
... Pop+Shift remaining Box30 rows (2 ops * 3 rows = 6 operations)
... Pop+Shift Box2:Box29 (2 ops * 5 rows * 27 boxes = 270 operations)
... Pop+Shift Box1Row4:Box1Row5 (2 ops * 2 rows = 4 operations)
... Insert Alola Ratatta: 1 operation

total operations to insert Alola Ratatta: 1 + 6 + 270 + 4 + 1= 282

and that's why you should store alts separately!

They just announced maintenance for Friday that will fix the trigger not working for some people with a full dex.

And clearly I never read the Pokedex entries for this thing. Artifical souls, Pokmon? That's a thing now?
