Bloomberg: "The best known socialist in the country happens to be a millionaire with 3 houses! What'd I miss here?"
Sanders: "Well you missed that I work in Washington, House 1, live in Burlington, House 2, and like thousands of other Vermonters, I do have a summer camp. Forgive me for that. Where is your home, which tax haven do you live in?"
Bloomberg: "New York City."

Why did Bloomberg get flack/booed for that one? I think he won that exchange.

if sanders's net worth is 2 million, and bloomberg's 68 billion, then michael bloomberg is about 34 THOUSAND times more wealthy than bernie sanders

one thing all this bullshit demonstrates is our clear inability, generally speaking, to even fathom how much a billion dollars fucking is
but the other and more important thing is that this cheap and lazy talking point of denigrating or discrediting an individual based on how much money they personally have does nothing to further discussion on the ACTUAL substantive points that need to be addressed regarding the unprecedented income inequality and the corrupting power of money in politics

Bernie still tried to casually brush off his 600k lake home as if that's something most people can relate to.

Bernie also used to proclaim how the millionaires and billionaires needed to "pay their fair share". He still says that about the billionaires, but funny how he no long attacks the millionaires these days.

Bloomberg, in the same sentence, said that Bernie was a communist.

I mean, it's a pretty dumb argument for Bloomberg to make. Is the implication supposed to be that he's not as "socialist" as he claims to be or people think he is?

Because that dreaded "socialist" stigma is probably the one thing keeping Bernie from running away with the nomination.

Are property taxes high in New York? I know rents are high in New York.

All my time on CE and politics board I hear non-stop "California California" it overshadows New York.

He wrote a book that sold well and became a millionaire. Hes now part of the 1 percent and is actually a capitalist. His lifes work and goodwill of all those protests he attended was thrown out the window once his bank account reached $1,000,000. He doesnt really care about the poor. Bernie is a fraud.

This. I would expect a man his age and earning potential to have a million or two dollars. It's a lot of money, but if you ever want to retire at a reasonable age you're going to need money like that.

This is in the same dumb vein as Buttigieg saying "I'm the only one on this stage who isn't a millionaire" like it was a matter of decisions he made, rather than most of the other people on the stage drawing 20+ more years of salary than him.

You know how people cheer when their team does well and boo when the other team does well?

Somewhere along the line, you must have picked up the idea the political alignments are more meaningful than sports fandom. They generally aren't.

His response to his hypocrisy was literally I wrote a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire too if you write a best-selling book. So how is that different from the billionaires he constantly criticizes? The cap on how much money it's ok to have seems to be whatever he's worth at the time.

I've never understood how obvious grifters like Trump and Bernie somehow manage to gain followers.

No he didn't. He was asked about it point blank in the debate and he said he's against the Trump tax plan for the 1%(that includes him by the way) and he'll continue to fight against building wealth for the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the poorest.

The focus on billionaires in his speeches is to attack Bloomberg. The moment the rumors of Bloomberg entering the race sprouted up last year he started focusing on that.

I also don't understand the hypocrisy claims. Is Bernie pushing for legislation to preserve his wealth? He never claimed that millionaires/billionaires should e.g. donate more. He says that they should pay their fair share, which means a combination of laws that increase the amount paid by rich people as well as not finding ways to hide your wealth.

I also don't understand the hypocrisy claims.

The problem with Bernie isn't that he opposes income tax cuts for wealthy people. Basically all democrats do.

The problem is that he spreads a lot of economic illiteracy. Don't tell me that billionaires shouldn't exist or that I don't gain anything from them, and then turn around and say you earned your millions because you wrote a book I don't care about.

If his views were limited to "money shouldn't buy power" he'd be a lot more popular.
