Can I beat the game just doing the main orders and ignoring the side quest orders?

And two, if I can do that, how long would it take?

I am enjoying the game, but I can see myself get bored if it's like, over 20 hours, and these side quest orders are just more of the same. I currently just arrived at the lake city and I'm supposed to go get on a boat.

Yes. And probably like 30 hours+. I enjoy the game too, put at least 30+ hours and am on episode 3. I do like to try for the subquests though.

Yeah, it's surprisingly fun. Looks a little meh, but when you try it out, it feels like a really good game.

Because you're questioning the value of the side quest. The game gets more fun after you do the next part. You get more tools that make the journey more fun. The side quest give better rewards like stronger grenades or more durable ladders or upgrading gear.

Rush through chapter 3 then go at whatever pace is fun for you.
