They're a bunch of racists. When you think of the negative southerner stereotypes, my southern family members check all the boxes.

When I got engaged to a black woman they were talking mad shit on Facebook about how I'm bringing a dirty n-word into the family and then they got offended when they didn't get a wedding invite

I once went to a party at some guys place and he had a confederate flag up (I live in Canada) I didn't know the guy too well but I never heard him say racist shit before, so I asked what the deal was and if he had some connection to American south. He gave me a deer in headlights look and had no idea why I would ask that question.

He thought it was called the redneck flag. Something that you fly to show that you're proud of being a redneck. Had no idea about the Confederacy .

When everything tangible that a symbol has been used to achieved is deplorable, maybe it would be smart to let it die, not try to redefine it has pride in some nebulous ideals that do not jive with the historical intent of the symbol.

2. Racism. Because it's a symbol of slavery.

3. Hatred. Because again, symbol of slavery.

4. Ignorance. For those who claim it's "heritage".

I've met people like this, and it does complicate the issue. There are quite a few people who only really know the flag by this more recently ascribed meaning, and don't care about (or know much about) the US civil war at all. But they get really defensive if you tell them the origins of the flag and the ideals the confederate army was representing.

I guess they would come under the "idiot at best" classification

A relic from perhaps the most tragic period of our nation's history, where the elites of two halves of the country sent ordinary men to fight and die wholesale fighting other ordinary men in a bloody attempt to advance the elites' respective economic interests.

What does the Confederate flag mean to me personally? I see it as somewhat foreign, owning it if not simply because I collect all kinds of flags, but otherwise see it as a subjective reflection of the individual motivations and views of the individuals that still display or own them.

With respect to these different views on it: the flag stands chiefly for the institution of slavery which the Confederacy was historically founded to preserve; for racism and racist institutions which the flag was flown and adopted in various forms in support of throughout the late 19th and 20th Centuries; for a "lost cause" romanticism largely fabricated about the old south after the war; for southern regionalism as southern soldiers flew it during WW2 as a symbolic show of southerners' support for a unified American war effort; for the southern Rockabilly and Southern Rock music scenes drawing from this regional symbolism, which led it to become a general symbol of "rebellion" among trailer types, whether of the south's rebellion from the north, or of southern rockers' rebellion against the establishment.

Basically, it's a touchy subject and its meaning is very sensitive to the historical and cultural context it has been used.

I live in Louisiana where its very common and I live in a family of racists. My cousins have this shit. The whole Hank Williams Jr. Confederate flag about the south rising again and whatever.

If you think anyone here is lying about the whole confederate flag ordeal with racism, you're stupid. I see it everywhere. Maybe there's a few good guys but it all happens behind closed doors and nowadays its much more open. The n word flew around so much when I was a kid, I'm surprised I turned out the way I am.

I completely stepped away from that terrible shit.
