Cat or Dog

Sucks being alone all the time. So I think I'm going to be shopping for a cat or dog. Which one makes a good companion for a single male? <_<

This is insanely accurate, lol.

I like both dogs and cats, but I prefer to own a cat because they're much more independent. You don't really have to worry about leaving them alone, they don't need to be walked or let outside to use the bathroom, etc. They'll pretty much just chill on their own the vast majority of the time, do their own thing, then you can come together once in a while for cuddles or playtime. Just keep their food and water full and clean their litter box and that's about it.

Part of the reason is a dog is more likely to be obnoxiously in the man's face demanding attention making it difficult to ignore (especially large dogs).
A cat is more prone to independence, which can result in it being forgotten more often by the busy man...

^ALL this.
Whether choosing between a cat and a dog it depends on what level of attachment you are looking for AND how much time you have (dogs will require A LOT more time, like taking them out for walks and more time for attention).

I have a cat like that but only in my room oddly she doesnt have much to do with me elsewhere. That being said those types of cats choose you on reasons beyond my understanding. Dogs seem to choose who feeds them and plays with them the most. In other words its easier to get a dog to like you.

This to a T. Cats are low maintenance. If you live by yourself, odds are you aren't equipped to take care of a dog properly. I tried once and ended up having to give him to a family that could take better care of him.

I know cats that can be starving and they wouldnt kill birds, even if they are distracted eating. Once a cat even tried to eat the bread instead of the bird, but of course the cat didnt like the bread. Even still the cat didnt kill the bird.

Every cat is different, not all cats kill for fun or torture.

Dogs can be generalized, cats can't. You treat a dog well, it'll react like every other dog and like you (excepting perhaps cases of abuse).

Treat a cat well, and any number of things could happen. Usually they'll warm up to you and let you pet them and stuff. Sometimes they won't.

Sometimes they'll be glued to your hip, sit on you whenever you're sitting, and need to be pushed away to get yourself some "you"-time.
Sometimes they'll just hang around, only getting close enough to be fed. Or so I'm told.

My family has always treated cats very well, and I've never met a cat that was anti-social past the skittish-of-strangers stage. Some are more cuddly than others, but they're all very affectionate.

I'm absolutely convinced people treat cats poorly and so cats treat them poorly, and that's the only reason people have a notion that cats are any less friendly than dogs.

Dogs are more pushy about it, but cats can display a much wholler range of affection.

Dogs will love you as long as you give em the basics and don't abuse them. You need to be friendly with cats, and patient, to get them to be friendly with you.

Cats require the same kind of understanding you need to befriend and build wholesome relationships with people. Dogs are kind of empty business connections.

Not that it's dogs' fault or anything, they are much more "group" oriented animals, and they act like it

I much prefer dogs, but as said it does kind of depend on the time you have, etc. Also your living situation. It can definitely be hard to find the time to go on walks regularly, but if you have a decent yard that isn't such a big deal as if you live in an apartment or house with little or no yard or whatever.

I'd also rather clean up poop in my back yard once in a while then have a cat toilet sitting around in my house, but I can see the pros and cons there.

Dog. Get a dog.

I have a boxer mix and a mastiff. Their companionship is top notch, they are always so happy to see me when I get home, and they always cheer me up. Mastiffs can be a pain at first, and you need to train them so they dont crush anything and anyone, but once they get through their puppy stage, they become lazy and docile, and big lovebugs. And when you hear them bark at noises outside, you know no one will ever break in.

Cats are like a roommate who wants YOU to move out.

True. 2 of my cousins cats don't care about me at all. One runs anytime I try to give it any attention. Meanwhile, the 3rd one will go sit by the chair I always go to, wait for me to sit down and then jump on my lap. It's kinda funny how different all his cats are. I think their personalities are on a wider spectrum than dogs. Not that dogs don't have a lot of personalities as well.
