Already bought it because it's zelda but only vaguely aware of all the open world stuff and just assumed it was like a bigger skyward sword with that dungeon design (big overworld dungeon comprised of 2 or 3 separate dungeons, stuff like that)

people keep saying it strays from the "traditional zelda formula" but it's like zelda 1

Artistically and combat-wise, it still feels like Zelda.

Other than that, it's a pretty extreme change in many aspects. No traditional dungeons, no heart pieces, equipment system similar to western RPGs, and some other stuff.

This. It both is and isnt a departure because OoT and really ALTTP before it changed the formula to the more dungeon progression style weve seen exhibited for a while, but BOTW takes such heavy inspiration from the esoteric Legend of Zelda (1) that to say its drastically different is also kind of lying about the series.

games in the same franchise dont have to be exactly the same, like MM1-6. We can have variations, it still be the same franchise, and they all still be awesome.

Yep. Completing shrines gets you spirit orbs which are traded 4 at a time for either an additional heart or more stamina

You get spirit orbs instead of heart pieces. They fulfill the same role

it's definitely different but it's still a fun game. only 4 main dungeons and they're kinda lame tbh. like they have some cool mechanics and you can do them in any order you want or even just skip them and go to the final boss. the sequel i definitely hope they either go with more traditional style with you gettings more items then just weapons or bows or if they keep it the same at least make it like 8 real dungeons.

the shrines add a lot of gameplay but they get pretty tedious after awhile so you probably won't even get them all. so it's a fun game but flawed but definitely a blueprint to work on.

If you think the series began with Ocarina of Time, sure.

It's a shame we dont have a term for games in the Zelda 1 genre, like Skyrim and Assassins Creed and checkers.

I have no idea whether or not he's a racist, but apparently there are recordings of him using racial slurs so it's a distinct possibility.
