You may want to use clippers to get it down a bit. Then use a razor. Maybe start with a #2 or #1 attachment and then work down from there. Also, if you plan on keeping it shaved, invest in a high quality razor and a high quality shaving soap. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive stuff, but it should be better than the cheap run of the mill stuff most guys use. Shaving is definitely a garbage in-garbage out proposition. Also, any lotion you put on your face/head should have some sunscreen in it. I see people in food lines at college, 19-20 year old kids with a crazy receding hairline or that top spot on their head already thinning out. If you're looking for cues on what to expect with your own hairline, check out your dad's hairline.
