They told him to do it about once a month. I think they just got tired of him filing helpdesk tickets about how slow or broken his computer is and gave him a placebo

I have said stuff like this to users too, sometimes it's good to give them some little task they can do on their own to boost their morale when they run into PC issues

We tell our users to restart their computer at least once a week. Guess how many actually do so?

They just close the lid, and open it again the next day. Month after month without a restart or shutdown, and then wonder why it's so slow.

I try to do it every Friday for my work computer, and as needed on my home systems (they're all Linux though, so I've never had any real slowdown or memory leak issues due to uptime)

If his computer is too slow then he needs to go to his boss about it. Not the helpdesk. Your friend is dumb.

If his boss don't give a shit about his slow ass computer than helpdesk won't. Deal with the crappy machines the company gives you.

That is indeed the vicious circle you'll often get locked into if you find yourself lumbered with a crappy machine.

Ah, had a guy demand a discrete graphics card for his shitty work computer. All he does is use Office, and Chrome. Also apparently he demands a monitor with an hdmi connection, no VGA allowed. So far got none of his wishes.
