If anyone was curious I am now at an air force base in California. Two weeks here and then I can return to Japan. The flight from Wuhan to here was not pleasant (converted cargo jet, makeshift seats, etc.), but the base itself is nice.

Li wenliang the doctor arrested and accused of spreading rumours after trying to warn people about the Coronavirus has now died due to the virus.

If anyone was sick they were likely to be left behind in China. You had to pass multiple temperature tests to get to the airport. At the airport the Chinese tested us again, the Americans tested us multiple times before leaving, we were tested again multiple times during the flight, and once more upon landing. My understanding is that another flight had people who showed symptoms during the flight and we're immediately hospitalized on landing but that didn't happen on our flight. If someone is sick now they're in a different room than me at least. All our meals are individually served, so not too worried at this point for it spreading. I am of course following all rules, wearing masks, checking temp twice a day, washing hands like it's my job, etc.

The base has us in fairly nice hotel rooms. No complaints on anything post flight, but most agreed everything involving the state department before and during the flight was worse than could be reasonably expected. I don't want to say too much about it, but many took videos and pictures and we were all contacted by the media, so expect someone to have some big expose.

Dude I was having a great time in Wuhan eating excellent food and playing Mahjong all day. I only left because I need to return to Japan. I am no fan of the PRC (or any other communist dictatorship) and America is certainly better. But I just want to go back to Japan.

Health authorities in China on Thursday reported 28,060 confirmed cases there, with 564 people having died from the virus, officially known as 2019-nCoV, that was first identified in December. Nearly 200 other cases have appeared outside of China and Hong Kong, with one additional death, in the Philippines.
Outside China, several newly confirmed cases have been traced to an international business meeting held in Singapore in mid-January. Malaysia and South Korea have confirmed three cases related to the meeting at the Grand Hyatt Singapore hotel, where four new cases have been discovered, bringing the city-state's total to 28.

In the U.S., a 12th case was confirmed on Wednesday in Wisconsin.

Source is China daily which is state owned by China, seems like they're going door to door rounding up any suspected cases and anybody showing symptoms.

Hubei 2447 cases, 69 deaths, serious condition 4002.

In Canada, British Columbia identifies 2 new cases of #coronavirus (Wuhan connected), bringing total to 4. Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Henry says the two new cases are related to the case announced earlier this week. Canada is still allowing flights in from China.

That must have been the other flight from yesterday. My flight was very similar, but we only had one guy with the full cable coming out of the back thing type of suit. Most of them had different suits on that were just full body suits. But that flight in the video was also the one where they had I think 4 people isolated after landing because they showed symptoms.

The Event 201 scenario

Event 201 simulates an outbreak of a novel zoonotic coronavirus transmitted from bats to pigs to people that eventually becomes efficiently transmissible from person to person, leading to a severe pandemic. The pathogen and the disease it causes are modeled largely on SARS, but it is more transmissible in the community setting by people with mild symptoms.

The disease starts in pig farms in Brazil, quietly and slowly at first, but then it starts to spread more rapidly in healthcare settings. The scenario ends at the 18-month point, with 65 million deaths. The pandemic is beginning to slow due to the decreasing number of susceptible people. The pandemic will continue at some rate until there is an effective vaccine or until 80-90 % of the global population has been exposed. From that point on, it is likely to be an endemic childhood disease.

The death of a Chinese doctor who tried to warn about the coronavirus outbreak has sparked an unprecedented level of public anger and grief in China.

Li Wenliang died after contracting the virus while treating patients in Wuhan.
Last December he sent a message to fellow medics warning of a virus he thought looked like Sars - another deadly coronavrius.
But he was told by police to "stop making false comments" and was investigated for "spreading rumours".

News of his death was met with an intense outpouring of grief on Chinese social media site Weibo - but this quickly turned into anger.
There had already been accusations against the government of downplaying the severity of the virus - and initially trying to keep it secret.

Dr Li's death has fuelled this further and triggered a conversation about the lack of freedom of speech in China.
The country's anti-corruption body has now said it will open an investigation into "issues involving Dr Li".
The Chinese government has previously admitted "shortcomings and deficiencies" in its response to the virus, which has now killed 636 people and infected 31,161 in mainland China.

Chinese social media has been flooded with anger - it is hard to recall an event in recent years that has triggered as much grief, rage and mistrust against the government.
The top two trending hashtags on the website were "Wuhan government owes Dr Li Wenliang and apology" and "We want freedom of speech".

Both hashtags were quickly censored. When the BBC searched Weibo on Friday, hundreds of thousands of comments had been wiped. Only a handful remain.
"This is not the death of a whistleblower. This is the death of a hero," said one comment on Weibo.
Many have now taken to posting under the hashtag "Can you manage, do you understand?" - a reference to the letter Dr Li was told to sign when he was accused of disturbing "social order".
These comments do not directly name him - but are telling of the mounting anger and distrust towards the government.

"Do not forget how you feel now. Do not forget this anger. We must not let this happen again," said one comment on Weibo.

"The truth will always be treated as a rumour. How long are you going to lie? What else do you have to hide?" another said.

"If you are angry with what you see, stand up," one said. "To the young people of this generation, the power of change is with you."

The death of Dr Li Wenliang has been a heart-breaking moment for this country. For the Chinese leadership it is an epic political disaster.

It lays bare the worst aspects of China's command and control system of governance under Xi Jinping - and the Communist Party would have to be blind not to see it.
If your response to a dangerous health emergency is for the police to harass a doctor trying to blow the whistle, then your structure is obviously broken.

The city's mayor - reaching for excuses - said he needed clearance to release critical information which all Chinese people were entitled to receive.

Now the spin doctors and censors will try to find a way to convince 1.4 billion people that Dr Li's death is not a clear example of the limits to the party's ability to manage an emergency - when openness can save lives, and restricting it can kill.
Chinese people are going to take some convincing.
