i have $12k sitting in a crappy wells fargo savings account and desperately want to do something with it, but the future of my living situation for this year is kinda ambiguous, and there could definitely come a time when i'd need immediate access to those funds

Split it. Put half of it in a high yield savings and then the other half into a long term investment.

I mean you can invest it in ETFs and if you need to liquidate it it'll take 2ish days to transfer back to your bank.

Your have to find that out with however you decide to invest with. For Robinhood for example withdrawals are free, but you have to transfer them to a bank a account.

That is until they their personal cash management releases.

For transfers? No unless you need a wire to get it immediately but a transfer is free for basically any brokerage account. It'll just take a day or so to complete.
