Im literally gutted right now about Kobes death and I probably debated more about how he wasnt as great as Lebron or MJ than anything.

Usually I let celeb deaths bounce off of me pretty easily but s***, this one hurts a lot

I suppose because it reminds us of our own mortality, and in some cases, it can feel like the loss of a friend despite not knowing them personally.

It brings down the whole "larger than life" feeling that a lot of celebrities have and reminds you how fragile everyone really is.

Because these are people we are somewhat familiar with. It's not as personal as a friend or family member dying, but it's more personal than a stranger dying.

Of course most of us can still feel empathy for strangers dying, but it tends to be a more generic "It's sad that that happened" feeling.

These celebrities inspired people. Kobe got millions of people to go out and play basketball.

A mix of this and the fact that while we didn't know them personally, they were a regular part of our lives. Hell I remember when Eddie Guerrero died. Watched him nearly every week for years. He was a big part of my childhood. I was in tears during that Raw episode dedicated to him.

Because celebrities are famous.

There's no existential mystery or unexplained theory about fascination over death.

All of this

I sucked ass at basketball but MJ, Kobe, and AI were still an inspiration for me and a bunch of my friends growing up and an important part of my childhood because of that, even if I just watched them on TV and never interacted with them
