"I'm going to get more to eat," you say as you sit up.

"Don't leave," Raven says as she reaches for you.

"I won't," you say. "I'll order room service."

You go to the room phone and dial room service.

"Hello," someone on the other end says. "How may I help you?"

"Yes, are we able to order food still?" you ask.

"Yes, but of a limited menu," they say. "No pizzas, pastas, stews, soups, salads, seafood or oven roasted items."

"So that leaves...?"

"Burgers, steaks, and a few other fried items."

"Then how about..."

"A couple order of French fries."

"That we can do," they say. "We'll send them up to your room when they're done."

"Thank you," you say.

You hang up and go back to Raven.

"Fries will be on the way," you say as you join her on the bed.

"Mmm, okay," she says.

While you were on the phone, she put her top back on, but you still kiss what bare skin on her chest is available. Raven strokes your hair as you rest your head on her bosom.

After about ten minutes, there's a knock on the door. You get up and answer the door and the bellhop has a cart.

"Thank you," you say.

You give the bellhop $10 as tip and wheel the cart the rest of the way. The order of fries also came with ketchup, but you'll use that just for dipping fries this time.

You and Raven eat up the fries while watching late night news. The summer is getting warmer, but all the more reason to use swimming pools when you can.

You still have plenty of time to rest before midnight, so you both take that time to brush your teeth, as well. You make your way down to the lobby at 11:50 and find the pool as midnight approaches. Raven leads the way into the water by walking down the steps.

The clock strikes midnight and you hear little chimes sound. You and Raven float towards the middle of the water as the fifth chime sounds. She smiles and kisses you as the seventh chime sounds, and you both head for the far side with the eighth. By the time the twelfth and final chime sounds, you and Raven relax in the corner of the pool.

And then a ghost floats in! She's wearing a very slinky outfit and plays with a pearl necklace around her neck.

"Whoa..." Raven says in a hushed tone. "A spirit just showing up casually?"

"Let's wait and see what happens," you whisper.

"Okay," Raven whispers back.

You two watch this ghost woman float about, still playing with those pearls. She floats down closer to the water, but looks sad that she can't see herself in it, let alone touch it. She sighs as she comes closer and closer to dip into the water, but is clearly disappointed that she doesn't feel it around her.

"Aw..." Raven sighs as she rests her head on your shoulder. "So sad... Don't you think so?"

"Yes, very," you say. "Though I'm surprised you're so empathetic."

"I'm White Raven now," she says. "I'm much more comfortable with sharing my emotions now."

"Ah, of course," you say.

The ghost woman turns and spots you and Raven. She seems to notice that you two are looking right at her.

"Oh!" she says. "You can see me?"

You and Raven stand up straight as the ghost woman floats over to you with a very excited expression now.

"Can't most people see you?" you and Raven ask.

"Not always," the ghost says. "It was some time ago when this other British fella came snooping around, but he didn't stick around long."

"Oh..." you say. "John Constatine..."

"Such a sinful man," the ghost says with a sultry tone and big smile. "He would've thrived during my time, I'm sure of it."

"I believe you," you say.

"Hmm..." the ghost says as she floats up closer to Raven. "I feel a bit of sinful spice coming off of you."

"What kind of spice?" Raven asks.

"Don't try and play it off, honey," the ghost says. "You may be pale, but you've got the glow of hanky panky on your face."

You and Raven blush and stammer.

"We didn't 'hanky panky,'" Raven defends.

"But you still got down 'n' dirty, didn' ya?" the ghost says.

"Well, yes," you say. "We actually had to clean up."

"Wow~!" the ghost says. "What did you do?"

"Oh, no, we shouldn't share that," you say.

"Aww c'mon~..." the ghost pouts. "Just a little itty bitty tidbit?"

"No, no, no," you say. "We're not the kind to kiss and tell."

"You're no fun," the ghost pouts more. "What's your name, anyway?"

"I am Rorek Null VII."

"And I'm Raven."

"Well that's a pretty name!" the ghost says to Raven. "I'm not so sure about his, though."

Raven giggles while you stare blankly at the water.

"What's your name?" Raven asks the ghost.

"I'm... Um, I haven't heard it in so long, I'm not sure anymore."

"Aw..." Raven says again. "Do you remember even a little about it?"

"I think my name was something like Bonnie. Or Bunny? Bon... Bun... I'm pretty sure it ended in 'nee,' though."

"Well for now, let's stick with..."

"Bonnie. Mostly because it's the more normal name."

"Alright," the ghost shrugs.

"So, Bonnie," Raven says. "What do you remember about your life?"

"Hmm... Well... I remember a lot of casinos and gambling."

"That narrows it down to the four decade heydey of Hot Springs," you say.

"Any specifics?" Raven asks. "Who was around? How were they dressed?"

"Um... Men in nice suits and ladies in nice dresses," Bonnie says.

"Still doesn't really narrow things down," you say. "It wasn't until the 60's that things became far more casual and freeform."

"Oh, I do remember a lot of men in uniform," Bonnie says. "They were soldiers. Officers, even. And they were all partying it up, too."

"That must mean Bonnie's from the 1940's," you say. "There's a good chance the men she's speaking of are from World War II."

"But before or after?" Raven asks. "People party it up because they're afraid they won't get to party again, just as much as they party because they made it through."

"Maybe it was both," you say. "Bonnie surely lived in Hot Springs that entire time, she could've been around men heading off to war, and then again when they came back home."

"Yeah, I think that's right," Bonnie says. "Cuz there was also a boring period where there weren't a whole lot of handsome guys around. They were probably all off fightin'."

"Bonnie looks young, doesn't she?" Raven whispers to you. "Not as young as us, but still."

"Yes, that's true," you say.

"Should we ask if she remembers her death?"

"Maybe. But I'd be careful how you bring it up."

"Right, of course," Raven nods. "Dying so young must've meant something tragic happened."

"A good point," you say.

"So, Bonnie," Raven starts. "Um, what else about your life do you remember?"

"I remember drinking with those soldiers," Bonnie says. "Lots of different ones. They treated me to all kinds of food and drinks, and we had a great time."

"Wow, you must've been really popular," Raven chuckles. "What did you do for a living?"

"Um... I can't really remember. I think it was at a casino, actually. I'd meet men at the casino, spend time with them, and then spend some quality time with them, and repeat."

"Umm... Does that mean..." Raven starts.

"You were an escort?" you finish.

"What? No! I wasn't an escort!"

"Sorry, we didn't mean to assume you were being paid for sex," you say.

"No way, that's illegal," Bonnie says. "I'm just fast."

Bonnie winks and giggles as she plays with her pearls again.

"Who do you remember being with last?" Raven asks.

"Um... He was a nice guy," Bonnie says. "Tall, handsome, and very strong. He wasn't a local guy, but a buddy who was brought him here."

"Do you remember his name?" you ask.

"I think it was 'Joe,'" she says. "He was part of the ground infantry, I think."

"So, he was 'GI Joe'?" Raven says.

"I guess you could say that, yeah," Bonnie says. "The local guy called him 'Joey,' though. But either way, Joe was something special. Though, for the life a me, I can't really remember much else. Or, maybe I should say, for the afterlife of me."

Bonnie giggles at her own joke while floating backwards. She reclines and looks up at the ceiling, but the nostalgic look on her face says she's seeing this GI Joe.

"Do you remember how you died?" Raven asks.

Bonnie's face goes from nostalgic to sad, but also curious.

"I'm not sure," Bonnie says.

She sits up though still floating around.

"I remember it was another wild night in town," she says. "Joe was there, his buddy the local guy was there, and a lot of other friends a theirs. Then it gets hard to keep it all straight in my head. Maybe that's because it was the last night I was alive...?"

"Well, we've never been ghosts, so we can't be sure," you say with a shrug.

"I hadn't thought about those days in so long," Bonnie says. "I wish I could remember them."

"Maybe we could use magic," you say to Raven.

"Are you sure?" she says. "If you're thinking of the technique I'm thinking of, that might be risky for us."

"But you want to help Bonnie, don't you?"

"You're going to help me remember my living life?" Bonnie asks as she floats in close again.

"Well, I guess we have no choice now," Raven says with a shrug. "But how would we start?"

"Let's try this," you say as you go to the edge of the pool.

You pull yourself up and out of the water and Raven follows. Bonnie watches you and Raven shake off some water. You gather up the water and use Alchemy to turn it into gunpowder. You sprinkle that powder into a broad circle around you and Raven.

"This gunpowder will be our timer," you say. "We will only have until the fire goes out to solve the mystery of Bonnie's last days. The blend of gunpowder I've made should give us a couple hours, so we might not succeed in knowing what happened at the end."

"You mean my death," Bonnie says.

"Exactly," you say. "Bonnie, you float above the circle. This will be a form of astral projection that takes us into the past, to when you were last alive, but it is no guarantee it will be the day of your death, or even the same week."

"Anything you can help me remember is good enough for me," Bonnie says.

Bonnie floats over the circle as you and Raven stand close and hold hands.

"Avosa, chaicha, diarni, dineri, cusvo, zanna!" you and Raven say together.

You use fire elemental magic to spark the circle and you're suddenly feeling like you're in a lucid dream. You're a little bit hazy as you and Raven find yourselves... well, still in the pool house. But it's daytime, with many people around, in swim wear fitting of the 1940's, meaning they're in frilly one pieces and matching swim caps.

Bonnie is here in the flesh, wearing the same dress and pearls she was as a spirit. You and Raven are in the swim wear you were in present day, which gets a lot people staring. In some cases, mothers are covering their sons' eyes in regards to Raven.

"What're you doing, wearing something so indecent?" one somewhat portly mother says angrily.

"Sorry, we got them while in France," you say. "They're all the rage over there."

Some of the younger women seem intrigued. You take Raven by the hand, and the two of you lead Bonnie out of the pool house.

"Well then," you say. "Let's change our clothing, shall we?"

"Right," Raven nods.

The two of you focus your imagination and your board shorts and her bikini become a three-piece suit for you and a dress not unlike Bonnie's for Raven.

"And now, let's start our search with..."

"The casino where Bonnie works."

"Right this way then," Bonnie says.

She leads the way and you go outside onto the street. It is very active out here, and many men are in uniform. You and Raven follow Bonnie to the northwest side of town, and to a casino called The Silver Clover.

"Here we are," Bonnie says. "I'm not sure what time of day this is, but there's a good chance Joey might show up soon."

Bonnie goes inside and you follow.

"Wait here while I check in with my manager," she says.

"Bonnie, this isn't really the 1940's," you say. "We didn't physically travel through time, so you don't really need to worry about normal things like work."

"Oh. Well, I... I still would like to see some of my old friends."

"Oh. That's... Well, in that case, go ahead."

Bonnie hurries off, leaving you and Raven to sit on chairs in the lobby. As you wait, more people come and go, but you have no idea who GI Joe might be.

"Hey, wait a minute," someone says. "Don't I know you?"

A tall man with broad shoulders walks over.

"Um, excuse me?" you ask as you stand up.

"Yeah, that accent confirms it," the man says. "British, white hair, blue eyes. We heard legends about you and Captain Trevor storming into some places, taking the fight to those Nazi monsters."

"Um... I'm not sure what..."

You quickly realize he means your grandfather.

"Oh...! The raids on the Nazis," you say. "Yes, well..."

"Steve agreed that it wasn't fair the Germans started the war only to sit back inside their forts. We were just making sure they were still trying."

"Hah! That's good stuff, pal."

"Joey!" Bonnie says as she returns.

"There's my girl!" the man says as he walks up to meet her.

"Oh, so you're GI Joe," Raven says.

"GI Joe?" he says.

"Yeah, that's kinda your nickname now," Bonnie says. "Cuz you were infantry and all that."

"Oh, that's clever," he says. "But then, you've already met?"

"Yeah, yeah, just this mornin'," Bonnie says. "They just got into town late last night, wanted to know where to go for some fun, so I've offered to show them around."

"Well that's awful kind of you," Joe says. "I already know baby doll here, and all the boys know Rory Null, Britain's finest. But who is your lady friend?"

"I'm Raven," she says as she shakes his hand. "Roth. Raven Roth."

"Well when did you have time to meet her?" Joe says.

"I was volunteering in London," Raven says. "I was at one of the hospitals. Not as a nurse, but as a secretary. Rory was frequently visiting, so we saw each other almost every day. At a certain point, he just asked me on a date, and I said yes."

"I see," Joe says. "So what brought you both here?"

"We heard about this place from some of the American troops stationed at the hospital for recovery. I was curious and Raven was willing to travel here with me."

"Well then, how about we show them some fun?" Joe says to Bonnie.

"Certainly," Bonnie says. "Um, what do you folks want to do first?"

"How about we make some money?" you say. "Cards, dice, whatever you recommend."

"I like the sound of that," Joe says. "How about some Texas Hold 'em?"

"I'll lead the way," Bonnie says with a big smile.

She takes Joe arm-in-arm while you and Raven follow behind.

"We didn't actually travel back in time," Raven whispers, "so how does GI Joe know you? Or, recognize you as your grandfather?"

"I know, I know," you say. "This is supposed to be GI Joe as Bonnie knew him. But that surely means Bonnie heard about Sixth and Captain Steve Trevor from Joe and any other number of soldiers that visited Hot Springs. Though, she probably didn't connect the dots when we introduced ourselves."

"Well, she couldn't remember her name, so I suppose she'd consciously forgotten a lot of everything else," Raven says.

You four enter the casino's game area and pass by the slot machines to go to the card tables. Joe sits at one so you join him, with the ladies sticking close.

"The blind is minimum of $20," the dealer says as he gives out chips.

You put up the small blind of $10, while Joe puts up the big blind of $20.

The first burned card is the Ace of Hearts then deals out pocket cards to you and Joe. You take a peek and have the Seven of Clubs and Jack of Spades. Both black means a Straight, a Flush or even a Straight Flush is still possible.

The dealer looks to you for the first bet. You won't really lose any money, so you don't need to hold back. You raise things to $50.

"Well, well," Joe says. "A bold move. I like it."

Joe calls and the dealer burns the King of Diamonds. Joe lingers on that, so perhaps he was hoping for something in the high ranks. To be honest, it would've helped you to have a chance at a highst Straight. But again, you're not as worried since this isn't real money.

Now comes the Flop. The Four of Diamonds, Eight of Diamonds and Four of Hearts. None of those help you but you doubt it helps Joe much either. Your Straight is still possible, if a Nine and Ten appear later. For now, you'll pressure Joe with the bet. You go up to $75. Joe still calls, so maybe he's willing to see how the turn and river go, too.

The Five of Diamonds is burned, and the turn is the Nine of Diamonds! That's very good for you, but you keep calm. You raise again to $100. Joe reluctantly calls and the burn is the Eight of Spades. The river... is a Ten! The Ten of Clubs completes your Straight! You smile as you show your cards, and Joe sighs as he shows he had a King and a Two.

"Rough luck, mate," you chuckle. "Maybe next hand?"

"Maybe," he shrugs.

The dealer takes the cards and puts them aside to continue from there.

"Hey, there, Bunny Baby," some other man says as he walks up. "How's my favorite gal?"

"Oh, um, hello...?" Bonnie says.

"Who is this?" Joe and the new man say as they look at each other.

"Uh oh," Raven says as Joe stands up.

"Why're you calling my Bonnie 'Bunny?'" Joe asks. "Let alone 'baby.'"

"Who're you to say she's your Bonnie?" the other man says.

"Boys, let's calm down," Bonnie says.

"Bonnie, who is this?" they both ask her.

"Joey, meet Sam," she says. "Sam, meet Joey. And I was seeing Sam when we first got into the war, and then I started seeing Joey while we were in it, before he went off for his own deployment."

"You really were fast," Raven whispers to her.

"Well, Sam," you say to the other man.

"How about we play another game? A different game."

"Sure," Sam says. "Let's try something that takes a bit more luck."

Sam leads the way and everyone follows him to the roulette table.

"Roulette, huh?" Joe says. "Rather face Lady Luck than the man across from you?"

"If you're asking if I would rather stare into the eyes of a lovely lady than some towering lunk like you," Sam counters, "then of course."

"Place your bets," the table runner says.

Roulette is a straight forward game with the wheel and simply betting on what number the little white marble lands on. And obviously, the more specific your bet, the more you make back. You use the chips you won out of Hold 'em to bet here.

You stick to the easiest bet and go by the colors.

"We'll bet on black," you say as you put $100 on the black diamond.

Sam bets on the equally easier Odds over Evens. Joe goes for the riskier middle 12 numbers. They each bet $50.

"No more bets," the table runner says.

The roulette spins and the marble is sent out. Everyone watches the marble roll and...

"12," they say as the marble lands.

You all lose since 12 is red, even, and in the right column of numbers. All three of you sigh and go again.
