It's kinda tricky because when you try to define it inevitably people will say "but I had a woman do this to me before", and so on. Which is true, but doesn't really account for the behaviour that women are familiar with that guys generally don't experience.

Which goes for pretty much all instances of sexism

its absolute, complete horseshit and totally dependent on who the dominant sex is. I work as the only male OBGYN in a 16 doctor residency and the amount of bullshit people spew off to me is astounding. It has everything to do with who the majority is, nothing intrinsic to being a man.

Wouldn't the fact that he has to explain it prove that he does indeed know better though?

I'll explain stuff all the time because if I understand it but someone else, man or woman, doesn't understand it, then I want to help them.

So here I am at work, taking the elevator. Before it can go down, two people get on.
One is a woman. A brunette who looks a little older than me, so somewhere in her mid twenties. And the other is a much older guy in a blue suit. Tall, in good shape; he kind of looks like John Cena except you can clearly make him out.

Anyway, they start having a conversation about some meeting they came here for. The guy was like, "I had to take the train here, traffic downtown was crazy!"
And the girl was like, "Yeah, I drove down here."
This bothered the guy. He was like, "Woah, hold on. Why would you do that?"
But Everytime she would try to reply to him, he would interrupt her by saying "Hey".
I had to clinch my fists in anger at this point to stop myself from jumping in and unleashing my rage all over this tool.

Eventually he smugly went "Hey, hey, hey, listen. When the traffic is bad like that, don't drive, just take the train. Okay?"
I can see her face spelling out defeat.
He was waiting for her to reply, so again he said, "Okay?"
"Okay," she replied.
I was literally shaking at this point. Why did he need her response to reassure his shitty advice?

So after what seemed like a long elevator ride, we all finally got off on our floor. They went their seperate ways but all I could think about was the number of ways I would fuck this guy up if he ever tried that shit on me.
I was so into my power fantasy that I didn't realize that I was having a pretty bad nosebleed. I looked down at my white blouse and blood was everywhere. So now I'm in the restroom cleaning myself up.

Anyway, how was your day, TC?

Mansplaining is when a man explains something to a woman where the woman actually knows more about it than the man. The man just assumed she doesn't cause she is a woman.

what would be the fault in phrasing differently?
i'm sure there's still fault in it and it makes men bad somehow to say "would it be helpful to keep a calendar so you'd know when to start carrying pads on you?"
i'm sure this is reprehensible behavior still

I dont necessarily believe in it

I think its purely an ego or arrogance thing. I work in healthcare and its predominated by women and the amount of women who splain things in the most condescending way possible is alarming. I dont believe its anything to do with sex its just how some people are.

In general, on average, men and women communicate differently.

It it took me a long time to realize that when a lady is telling me about a problem, they dont actually want to try to talk it through and figure out a solution. Thats how men communicate. Women want to be petted and sympathized with.

I believe this whole mansplaining thing came about from women who didnt understand that if a man hears a problem, hes going to try to help solve it.

Mansplaining is when a dude explains something, but he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about, in order to seem useful or informed.

Guys like to deny that this is a thing when in the context of it being done to a woman, but consider this, guys; does it not happen to you? You never get some dumbass explaining things to you, technical things, that you know to be bullshit?

But you agree that both men and women do it. But theres only a specific term for when a man does it to a women, and that specific term incorporates in its name the fact that the person doing it is a man.

Long story short, I dont agree with your definition.

Sometimes, specific terms like that come up based on frequency. For example, TERFs.

Because mansplaining is both condescension and sexism intertwined.

It's not just a man talking down to a woman, it's a man talking down to a woman because she's a woman. (and because she's a woman, she's clearly ignorant about masculine things like cars, sports rules, and how to be prepare for periods)

I'm not from a generation and/or place where this happens for cars or sports, but god, every single gaming event saw some neckbeard playing 20 questions gatekeeper to make sure my girlfriend was a real gamer, or knew the lore or whatever.

Although, within this vein is a fair counterpoint for @NeoShadowhen 's "side": Women will go out of their way to tell single fathers/men currently alone with their child how to handle kids. That they're holding the baby wrong, or should wipe their face or something.

No name for it, but there should be.
