How is this surprising? The term (as you can probably guess) originated from people who owned several cars, the weekend cars and the "daily drivers".

It's used a lot by tech journalists who test several phones a year, when they stick with one model for several weeks on a daily basis to test its usability for the average consumer. I guess you could argue they should be saying "my daily talker/typer" etc since you don't actually drive a phone, but it doesn't bother me much.

Its pretty pretentious to me because its only a thing with people in the tech world who use a thousand devices. Its not really slang that makes sense to consumers because basically no one is using multiple phones
