Any Muay Thai practitioners in CE?

I've done a variety of traditional Japanese arts in the past and I got quite good at that type of kick (chambered, quick, like a whip). Then I transitioned to "Muay Thai" (quite americanized, my gym calls it Muay Thai and some of the guys even compete in actual semi-pro and pro muay thai fights, even with the annoying music they play, but what we're learning resembles more Dutch kickboxing in my opinion, it's heavy on the boxing and setups, followed by kicks) and I picked up on the boxing well, I feel quite comfortable with it, but my kicks need work.

I can't seem to be able to land muay thai kicks in sparring, they just seem awkward to me. Hella powerful, but awkward. I can do them on the heavy bag just fine, but not in sparring.

Got any advice? Thanks!

Kick a tree until either it cracks in half or your leg does.

Those heavy bags can feel like a tree sometimes @_@

I was certainly not prepared for the feeling the first time I tried it lol. BTW that won't give you speed :P

Great thing to get into, probably one of the more efficient ways of combat because it combines boxing with leg kicks.

yeah. 6 months of muay thai will do more for you than many, many years in other more traditional arts.

Why do they feel awkward in sparring? You can throw them out pretty freely for the most part. Maybe try setting them up with some punches.

Like, look at these combos:

My kick at the end would be great if I were doing just the kick, but if I am doing the combo it won't be a good kick UNLESS I did it the japanese kick way, which is what I am trying to transition out of.

The "put your whole body into it"/spin your hips into the kick... it's not flowing as I'd like.

The most important thing is just to get more repetitions in. Something to keep in mind is that the punches set up your body for the kick. You see how he is mostly doing the right kick after a left hook? The left hook pretty much positions your body to kick because it puts your weight back to the kicking foot. So after the hook you can pretty much step for your kick immediately.

I got into muay thai because of fight girls on the oxygen channel lol. Would love to go to Thailand someday and catch a couple fights in person.

i knew a kid in high school who believed that Muay Thai was pronounced like Mai Tai, and that Mai Tai was spelled the same as Muay Thai, because his buddy Jeremy told him that. he believed everything that Jeremy would tell him lol.

LMAO

I had a dumbass female-friend who said "hahaha isn' t that a drink?" the first time she heard me say muay thai *face palm*
