We as a society long ago decided that the 't' in these words is silent. Only in one of them have people started saying the 't' again, and it's really annoying.

I say often with a hard T. Always have.

Well you've always been wrong. Your teachers should have told you this.

Yes they do, and what made you delete soffen from this post? Realize that everyone says it that way?

Still doesn't completely discredit his edited post. Often can be pronounced with or without a T sound (though more commonly with) according to dictionaries. The T is always observed as being silent in listen, fasten, and soften.

I don't remember quite how different subjects worked in elementary school. It's not like we had different classes. We certainly had "language arts" though and that's probably where they taught us how to pronounce things.

they never covered dialect apparently

This isn't about dialect. It's about silent letters. These are all the same type of word with the "ten" suffix.

It's funny, I notice all my professors and people I consider to be intelligent know how "often" should be pronounced. It's a lot of dumb millennials that I know that say it with a hard T.

perhaps the professors and intelligence people you know have heard that language is an evolving, nebulous monster
but you do seem like the prescriptive type

Its definitely dialectical variation and you know nothing about how language works.

If it was about dialect, I wouldn't be hearing people from my area saying it differently and pissing me off. Think a little bit, dude.

Ideolect then. Again, language is built by and defined by usage.
