Because an organized event can draw in people who otherwise wouldn't donate, so it makes perfect sense so long as the organization isn't a scam.

I don't think there's a single charity that exists on the planet that doesn't pocket like 75%+ of the donations itself. Even so called "non-profits." It was a real eye-opener going down that rabbit hole.

Pretty much this. People can donate to anything at any given time. However, not everyone is aware of the existence of these charities, and the extra hype these events generate usually cause people to donate easier/sooner/more.

Realistically, you need human bodies to carry out most charity work, so they need some kind of compensation unless you manage to get hundreds of people choosing to live in absolute poverty. Though there are plenty of scam organizations out there as well.

Charities still have overhead costs and need to pay competitively if they want worthwhile people running their organization
NPO executives often afford themselves generous salaries.

Yes, as do all executives, which is my point about competitive pay.
My point is while your money does some good, most of the time they're just marketing the feeling that you've done something good. The most altruistic charities tend to be independent fundraising events.

I never said giving to charity wasn't good or that you shouldn't do it.

What if (hypothetical) middleman personally took 10% of each donation? Would you be okay with that? What about 90%?

I mean the original guy is still donating to charity in some way. Who cares if the middleman is taking a 90% cut

At the end of the day, people donate to GDQ because it lets them give shout-outs, enter raffles, make requests, vote on upcoming games, etc.

It just so happens that the donations go to charity.

Bingo

Having your 'hilarious' anecdote read out on livestream and knowing "you've helped" is a lot more satisfying than anonymously helping an actual cause

This. Organized events bring awareness which means more donations than usual.

So? They're still putting money into charity, which is more than your bitching about is.

that's kinda the reason the event exists
it puts charity stuff into people's headspace and a lot of people just won't actually donate unless they feel tangible rewards from it (a prize in a giveaway, a callout on stream, etc)
