Its got a few good things but overall its very mediocre. But its odd iys now remembered well because most people thought it sucked for a long time.

I think its mediocre as a horror game and or game in general and possibly the worst Silent Hill.

Homecoming was really bad but a much better Silent Hill game.

Just replayed it last year along with 1-3. It's got some good ideas, but it's not a good game. The combat is awful and the game is just a chore to play most of the time. It is spooky though.

Run here. Run there. Pretty easily run around enemies. Run to the end of this stage. Through the subway, through a forest. Up and down a prison tower. Run away from ghosts. Now escort this person who being damaged affects the ending? What?

The ghosts are one of the things I really liked about SH4 because they actually made shit challenging.

I wasn't really a fan of the poltergeists though. I kinda wanted the room to be a safe space.

If you run around everything anyway then an enemy type where thats the only strategy is actually easier let alone 2 weapons to put 2 of them down for good.

So I just found this out after finishing my second playthrough, but you can completely ignore protecting her during the escort section and still get the good ending. Apparently you just light one of the candles next to her right before she stops following you on the final apartment section and it undoes all the effect of all the damage she took.

IIRC there's not enough candles to do this and banish all the poltergeists so it's a tough decision.

I finished the game on hard mode last time with spares at the end and still got the good ending despite not knowing that.

Depending on how fast you go through the game not every poltergeist will spawn so it might not matter. You can also just avoid the poltergeist if you really have to.

You have to banish the majority of them to get the best ending.

Four isn't a bad game but it probably should have been its own stand alone game and not part of the Silent Hill series.

Its a very weird stand off as a Silent hill game.

And as a game itself its very mixed with good and bad ideas.

Worst of all is i really dont care about any of the characters. Harry, James and Heather were all interesting, imo with the antagonists also doing fine.

Henry, Walter, Eileen? Any other resident? Who cares?

The enemies suck too. Dog, monkey,.....burp nurse? Again, who cares?

And even weird Big Head Eileen moments are random and not too effective.

I do think Henry controls well. 3d movement seems to work well and makes Henry feel very agile. When you get the rusted axe it really put the rest of the weapons to shame.

i've always thought it was a decent game, though obviously inferior to the first 3. people now are starting to look more fondly on it because of how terrible all the games that came after it were (unless you count PT I guess) and because the chances of a silent hill game that's better than it coming out are about zero at this point.

2 and 3 had the same control setting as an option. It's pretty bad in my opinion because when the camera angle changes everything goes to shit. It sucked you had no option for tank controls in 4, despite both being available in 2 and 3.

The theme was probably the best in the series. Being trapped in an apartment that is completely changing was very creepy and there was some really well done scares (random stuff you could see out your apartment window, that giant head, roots that looked like body parts)

Still, I got bored of it and never finished it

Great idea, weak execution

The apartment, when it healed you, made the game very easy, while it was then annoying to maintain the apartment afterwards.

There was nothing scary or really that creepy in 4. Things just were. The antagonist is just dumb, imo, and annoying. And your "stuck" in your apartment except you travel to "worlds".

Even then the characters, besides your neighbor, dont mean anything. You see them briefly then theyre gone, who cares.

The 10 star ranking is the most brutal and unrewarding in all of silent hills as well.

Awkward guy is stuck in spooky apartment and has to pointlessly go through boring worlds and avoid boring enemies, the game.

I disagree wholeheartedly with TC. Silent Hill 4 was always great, and I'm still waiting for the cultural zeitgeist to truly turn around on it. Topics like this one only enforce the notion that society hasn't changed its opinion on it.

Silent hill 4 is such a non silent hill game that everyone just assumed the rumor of it not originally being a silent hill game was true. It literally feels like a completely not silent hill game being turned into one by making loose references and saying its on the edge of town.

Literally does nothing silent hill, at all. Homecoming at least is a silent hill game.

This is just a fad "it was actually good" when people say that havnt played it since they first played it, and they said it sucked then.

I mean Sonic 06 was actually a legit 10/10 very good awesome game. Remember!?

Worse stories but they don't have some of the worst game design known to man

Backtracking through the entire game
Escort quests (that determine the ending)
Long boring sequence trudging back through the room every time you want to save
Tiny inventory were a piece of paper torn in half takes up as many slots as a machine gun and an iron pipe
Incredibly boring enemy design
Invincible enemies that chase you forever in a slow paced atmospheric game about exploring

Christ all it needed was an underwater level and an instant death forced stealth section

Appallingly awful game design. The kind only hipsters defend solely because they think being contrarian and different makes them sound cool.

Homecoming never had escorts and backtracking and boring long slogs to save the game or invincible enemies

By that alone it's not as shit as SH4's gameplay that was so utterly shit the series literally had to flee the country
