For me it's when I got my first real job at 20 and I could afford to pay things like rent and utilities.

Moved out when I was 17, but started to pay my share of the bills since I was, like 12 or 13, so it wasn't that painful of a transition when my very own bills came rolling in.

I thank my parents for that valuable lesson.
