Like she just washes up on shore and rather than just taking a shoopuf back to where she came from or getting a lift by the other al bhed or fucking anything, she decides to just follow this ragtag band on a pilgrimage that she just meets. Like okay she knows Tidus from before, but their interaction largely consist of her punching him in the nuts (my headcanon) and then saying she's sorry she did that. And yes, Yuna is her cousin, but I'm not sure she actually knows that, and regardless I don't think they've ever met each other, much less have any relationship. Her goal is to stop the summoners' pilgrimage, but she never brings this up at any point until the reveal that the summoner dies whens summoning the final aeon. Which makes sense from a narrative perspective, but I have no clue what her character motivation for tagging along is if not to try to convince Yuna to stop.

So that's her side, but equally baffling to me is everyone else just saying "sure, come along!". When they meet her, she, Yuna and Lulu have a "girl talk" after which Yuna wants her to join the party. I have no clue why Lulu was included in this talk. I'm assuming that, if Rikku does know about her and Yuna's relation that the conversation goes something along "oh hi im your cousin" "oh that's convenient, wanna join my party and make out?" "Sure!". Like, I can't imagine what else they would have a secret convo about that would lead to the conclusion of Rikku joining the party. Presumably she didn't reveal that she just tried to kidnap Yuna and that she wants to stop her pilgrimage. (Also it seems Tidus completely forgets that Rikku tried to kidnap Yuna about a quarter of a second after it happens). But everyone is all "sure the more the merrier" even though they have no clue what this fucking teenage girl (with an empty sphere grid!) can do, and the same exact people were all giving Tidus shit for not having proved himself for the task earlier in the game.

I don't get it. I really like the story and narrative flow of the game, but it feels like the B (as in butt-shot) team wrote this scene in its entirety.

Nah it makes perfect sense.

• She just got her ass beaten by just 2 of Yunas guardians. Their guard is going to be up now. Imagine the Al Bhed trying to take on 5 of them. She probably gets that Yuna isnt an easy kidnapping target (as opposed to the other two summoners you later encounter in Home).
• She probably does know Yuna is her cousin. Her dad is Cid, who is the leader of the Al Bhed and Yunas uncle. Someone like that is very informed of the goings-on in the world, including the very publicized journey of the daughter of High Summoner Braska.
• As to why she joined them - the ultimate goal is not kidnapping summoners; kidnapping them is just a means to an end. That end being, protecting them. Thats why she wants to become a guardian.
