I'd still give it to Star Wars.

Which says a lot.

Even if I expand it to three movies I think its only competition would be Back to the Future.

I guess it's hard to keep a movie franchise going for a long time huh.

Maybe Avatar will be the one to nail a perfect saga!

I am legit interested in the people who vote Alien or Predator.

Like I like Aliens and Predator more than any single Star Wars movie. But I can watch Attack of the Clones and The Rise of Skywalker and at least get some enjoyment out of it. But both franchises have more than one movie that are outright unwatchable. In one case they're both in the same incredibly awful piece of garbage. I do not have the heart to watch The Predator.

Do the AvP movies count against the Alien franchise, the Predator franchise, or both?

The Predator movies, minus the AvP bullshittery, were all watchable one way or another. Alien is still screwed over by 3 and Resurrection.

If we count dystopian-future as a sub-genre of science fiction, then Mad Max pretty much walks away with this handily right? I mean it's worst entry is still good.

If not that, then Tremors has no real low point for me so long as Michael Gross is still around and they still fully embrace their campiness.

i don't think it meets your criteria. there are only 3 movies, and two of them are a bit of a reboot (along with all the television) of the first one. there have been rumors of sequels for a while, but i don't think they're ever actually getting made.

I think the biggest thing for Star Wars for me is that I still have hope that there is good stuff to come. On top of that even the worst movies at least manage to be at least entertaining so I'm still willing to watch through the entire saga.

The rest just don't have that anymore. Most of them have down points that are so low they have to pretend they don't exist and even when then they still fuck up so there's just more shit to ignore.

It is, but it started with a movie back in the 90's. T.V series picked up a year or so where the movie left off. The tv series then had a bunch of made-for-tv movies.

Same as something like Captain Harlock. Or any Leji Matsumoto project from that era really.

I don't have the time to type up a more detailed response, but the 10-second version:
Star Wars is quintessential fantasy with a futuristic backdrop. Other than aesthetic trappings, it has none of the hallmarks of the science fiction genre.

The 1978 version of Space Pirate Captain Harlock is one of my favorite anime. The animation style is outdated but it isn't that long if Space Pirates VS aliens and the Government is your thing.

Galaxy Express is by the same guy. Set in the same universe too actually, but it's more character based with a story about Human's gaining immortality by becoming robots.

I love both. Also check out Space Battleship Yamamoto. Again, same dude, same universe.

that's just a more wordy way of saying sci-fi

See, this is wrong. Science fiction and fantasy are two genres, though there are similarities.

These are difficult concepts to discuss concretely, so I'll just copy/paste the wiki relating to the definition of science fiction, which itself acknowledges how goddamned difficult it is... but just because it's hard doesn't mean we should be lazy and say sci-fi and fantasy are the same genre with different backdrops.

"Science fiction" is difficult to define precisely, as it includes a wide range of concepts and themes. James Blish wrote: "Wells used the term originally to cover what we would today call "hard" science fiction, in which a conscientious attempt to be faithful to already known facts (as of the date of writing) was the substrate on which the story was to be built, and if the story was also to contain a miracle, it ought at least not to contain a whole arsenal of them."
According to Isaac Asimov, "Science fiction can be defined as that branch of literature which deals with the reaction of human beings to changes in science and technology."Robert A. Heinlein wrote that "A handy short definition of almost all science fiction might read: realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method."
Tom Shippey compared George Orwell's Coming Up for Air (1939) with Frederick Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth's The Space Merchants (1952), and concluded that the basic building block and distinguishing feature of a science fiction novel is the presence of the novum, a term Darko Suvin adapted from Ernst Bloch and defined as "a discrete piece of information recognizable as not-true, but also as not-unlike-true, not-flatly- (and in the current state of knowledge) impossible."
Lester del Rey wrote, "Even the devoted aficionado or fanhas a hard time trying to explain what science fiction is," and the lack of a "full satisfactory definition" is because "there are no easily delineated limits to science fiction." Author and editor Damon Knight summed up the difficulty, saying "science fiction is what we point to when we say it." Mark C. Glassey described science fiction as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart described pornography: "I know it when I see it."
