There should not even be such a thing as an out of network doctor. If you work at or with a facility in any capacity you must accept all the same insurance as every other doctor there.

This.

I'm sure there's stupid little nuances between companies that doctors would point out to justify this shit, but at the end of the day insurance is fucking insurance, it shouldn't matter.

Like, could you imagine if you got rear-ended by someone and then when you go to file an insurance claim they're like "Sorry that person doesn't accept our insurance. You have to spend $8000 on repairs."

Guys guys guys, you just don't get it, you don't understand capitalism! Businesses need to make money so they can reinvest in their company to research new life saving drugs/treatments. So when you think about it they're actually doing a really good thing and you should never ever question them. Ever.

It's a more attention grabbing title.
This provider paid it. Others may not have. The fact that it could even potentially cost 28k shows how fucked up the entire system.

Shit son, you don't even know the half of it. When I got my colonoscopy done I got 4 bills. The doctor, the hospital, the anesthesiologist, and then the lab they sent the biopsies to. The lab was out of network and I got 5000 dollar bill on it. Even though I had zero control over where they sent the biopsies.

Kasdan said her doctor's office, which shares a phone number and address with the lab, wanted her to turn over that entire insurance payment immediately.

It makes you wonder Wtf they're thinking. Have they possibly done this before with a lesser amount or did they just get stupid all of a sudden?

What if you could go to a restaurant that had no prices on the menu, you get a cheeseburger, then a bill for $28,000? There should be systems in place to prevent these things, but there aren't in healthcare. In fact, prices are deliberately inflated. It's fucked.

If they tried giving me the ladies' menu and refused to give me the men's, I'd walk out. If they tried pulling a bait-and-switch like your impossible scenario, I'd call the police.

In healthcare, a doctor that tries to pull nonsense like in the article should be promptly reported to the state medical board for ethics violations and make sure he knows it.

It's 100% legal and common practice to inflate costs in healthcare. You shouldn't have to ask to be sent in-network. You shouldn't have to ask for a price, you should get a quote right away, but you don't because that wouldn't be good for the little thing hospitals and insurance companies have going. The only thing that was the doctor had a hand in it, other wise it would be 100% acceptable. It cost around dollars a day for tylenol in a hospital visit. It's a straight up scam.

So youre saying that under Medicare For All, the woman in the OP wouldnt have incurred these costs. Got it.

Er, the woman in the OP didn't incur the cost. Her insurance covered it, you need to actually read the article.

The doctor was able to charge such an outrageous cost because the woman wasn't actually paying it. That's what a third party transaction is, doesn't matter if it's private or public.

That's called a co-pay, do you know how insurance works? It's no different from a public system taxing you. You're incurring a small cost to be covered for larger cost because... that's how insurance works.
