I loved Best Shopkeeper! And the Mario Odyssey one. That was the start of Best Music being really well produced too. And honestly all those complaints are localised to vest game. The truth is 2017 was an extremely stacked year so if was always going to be messy regarding people positioning their favourites over others, and dome people reacted on account of that.

Best World is a straight up mess though.

PUBG won that year even though it wasn't actually out and the entire staff stopped giving a shit about it literally the next day.

PUBG is the worst game to ever win GOTY and possibly the worst game to ever enter the top 10, especially notable in such a strong year. However, it makes sense as the site pick. Since 2015 how much a game meant to the site as a whole has been much more important. And thats fine, its their list.

Somehow I almost feel like 2018 Tetris is even worse, simply because it just seemed to fall into the position with no discussion at all. Another reminder that "oh right, a lot of the guys on this site are pretty old and nostalgia driven".

All the fantastic games in 2017 that got pushed back to make way for the fad game that was already dying is certainly rough, though, and oddly in contrast with the 2018 issues.

Both of those years still have the advantage of being memorable, though. Not only can I not remember any of the categories from 2019, despite there only being 4 of them, I don't even remember what won, nor can I remember more than half of what made the list. It's only been a month.

Sounds like a bunch of boomers not understanding the battle royale genre

The hardest part about Pubg winning for me was that the staff were all just so bad at it that it didnt seem like they even played it that much outside of Murder Island, and that it was more of an obligation vote.

The hardest part about 2017 for me was Alex towards the end lamenting not being able to get NieR the number one spot or even consideration for it because damnit I felt that. I had so much hope going in that he, with the help of Ben, would be able to get it into a serious conversation.

That's true. There was real hope going in, even with Abby's hate for it, because of the Mario and Zelda issues the staff had expressed before going in. Plus Abby didn't want PUBG winning in the slightest, so she wasn't going to fight for that.

But PUBG just shat itself into first place. Then it came out broken on Xbox in like a week, the update pipeline died, and the staff never cared about it again.

Best part is The Hero Dan Ryckert's tear down of RDR2 AKA The Bad Game.

Still a low tier year for cutting categories.

I think the contrast between 2019 and 2018 shows that they kept the core categories intact pretty well. Throw Old Game and Worst Game back in and I dont think you necessarily need more (if they dont have something to say). They still spent as long on the categories as many previous years. 2019 though, cutting moment? Crazy.

Also RDR2 is great but Dan made his case extremely well. It was right to be there.

I guess RDR2 technically doesn't work for me in most dissapointing because, from MY standpoint, Western Setting+Open World+Rockstar= 3 Strikes. The game never had a chance of being liked by me.

2017 is...an absolute fucking nightmare, for the exact opposite reason that I think 2019 was terrible. Though "They killed Mass Effect" is good stuff. HOLY SHIT do I hate that fucking game. My passion is equal to Brad's there.

Still crazy there is no Mass Effect Trilogy release for newer consoles. There must be some technical issue holding it back. That's the easiest money EA can make.

EA by and large does not remaster games. Burnout Paradise was a big exception, but it looks like a one-off. Really EA has drastically reduced their output as a publisher and I wouldnt expect much beyond the typical fare from them from now. Sports and DICE, then occasionally we are blessed with a Respawn game and cursed with a Bioware game.

I still find your Open World stance odd since thats such a broad thing.

I don't need a remaster, just a port is fine. ME1 already looks better than Andromeda anyways.

I just don't like any open world games. There are exceptions for smaller stuff that isn't REALLY open like Saints Row the Third, but for the most part...Fallout, Elders Scrolls, pretty much all games like that I just hate. I want guided, focused experiences, the more freedom the less I care. I got 10 hours into FFXV and hated every single second of it. Same thing happened when I played Breath of the Wild for the first time 3 weeks ago, 12 to 15 hours in and sent that back to Gamefly because I just couldn't stand it, not one second of it.

I literally never once ended a mission of MGSV without immediately calling a helicopter to go back to the menu, unless forced not to.

i'll play all 3 on my xbone.

I think if the predictions had been better, there could have been some interesting contrasts. For instance, I bet if you had said The Xbox series X will outsell the PS5 I bet you would get some decent differences. However these were really bad, the ESA one in particular was just ludicrous, and the Stadia one could have been alright except for surprisingly good year not being defined in any way. The only reasonable one was the Reggie one as noted.

Yeah its not really a bad thing if there is no reason to be there.

They can still talk over any Conferences from their home offices.

I would much rather trade the week East has to be away from home for E3 to get them back to two weeks for GotY-adjacent content

I dont think they have it, I believe he went to a preview event. Previews are out next week.

Also that Abby nightmare stream was great. They are doing good stuff with the solo content I just wish there was more if everything else.

Oh man that sucks for East content but hopefully it's a significant step up for him. I thought something was up when he said something like "you never know what can happen in a week" in the latest Beastcast, but I was hoping it was just a nod towards Dan.

He was a very welcome voice on the East coast and I was hoping he'd find his way into more content. Beastcast us going to have slim pickings without him if one of the regulars is gone for a week. Maybe an Austin appearance in the near future?

I'm sure some already listen to it, but the latest New Day podcast is a very Dan-heavy episode. They've made a 64 show bracket to decide the best TV show of all time and he's reading them off and occasionally interjecting.

I wouldn't consider the episode Dan-heavy at all. He's just reading the matchups and asking for the votes. He doesn't really inject any of his personality into the episode.
