Like using a normal long sword in their dominate hand and then a two handed great sword in their off hand. They could rest the great sword on their shoulder casually while fighting with the long sword and then mix in sudden longer reaching and harder hitting blows with the great sword while using the momentum to transition back into quicker normal swordplay, maybe have the two swords fit together to form a heavier great sword that could be used with two hands to further switch up the move set.

I was thinking it could be a cool combo for the main character of a new story I'm working on about the bodyguard of a "saint" who is really just a selfish con-woman who happens to bare a striking resemblance to some holy woman going around healing people and starting a new religion until one day she's found out after the true saint puts a price on her head and the bodyguard guy gets hurt trying to get her to safety and she reveals she's actually the younger twin sister of the real one but she just can't really use the same power until she tries to use it on the guy and like all of her built up heal magic goes to him and make him this super badass near immortal warrior type BUT she sees a horrific vision at the same time showing that by using that power she basically stole part of his soul in exchange for the heal and that her sister is deliberately going around stealing souls where as she was only stealing money so her and the guy set out on a quest to stop her sister from taking control of the entire country.

But yeah I want the guy to use an original weapon or weapon combo so I want to know if that combo has already been taken. My second choice would probably be a bident that doubles as a bow.

if I recall, for "giants" in 3E D&D, 2h weapons become 1h, so they can dual a 2h and a 1h

you could also do this in dark souls games, but it wouldn't be very effective

Yeah, I've actually played like this before, cool but not very fun. The... Abyss Watcher weapon, whatever it was called in Dark Souls 3 is pretty close to the idea except great sword plus dagger, which is still cool but a little too mundane.

Vergil from Devil May Cry uses a Katana and a two-handed sword. Dante does too but he can only switch between them; Vergil will use both in the same combo.

A boss in Dark Souls 2 uses a great sword in one hand and a smaller sword in the other.

One big problem with this set up is the strength required. Which will depend on how big the great sword is and all that.

But this is clearly fantasy... so you could just hand wave it.

Id say go for it.

Been a murder, over in Riften. Some old lady who runs an orphanage. Those poor children must be heartbroken.

Aww man, I completely forgot about Fume Knight, crazy considering I find him to be one of the hardest bosses in the game. Well... Maybe I can let that one slide since he doesn't fight like that for the whole battle...

Bartz does it briefly in a cut-scene in Dissidia, as I recall, but that doesn't really count, I guess?

But honestly I don't understand why you wouldn't just use a spear outside of rule of cool.

I haven't seen enough of the series to say it's completely true but Asta from Black Clover has dual wielded a 1 and 2 handed sword on at least one occasion. I kinda stopped watching after that arc. I should get back into it.

Here's the scene I'm talking about.

You cannot. You can dual wield normal swords but a greatsword must be used with two hands.

The Barbarian in Diablo 2 could wield two-handed swords in one hand, although they would deal less damage. He could also dual-wield weapons, so you could mix and match any two weapons you like, including two-handers.

Wielding a two-handed weapon in one hand only works with swords.

World of warcraft gave Fury Warriors Titan Grip to dual wield 2 handers. Theoretically could use a 1 hander too, but you would be gimping yourself.

Mindslayers can do that in Tales of Maj'eyal, but the 2 hander is psychically weidled

Thanks guys for all the answers but as I was writing up the early part of the script I realized the base idea is actually pretty close to the plot of Blood +, an anime series about vampires from 2005... might just have to scrap the whole thing now. Hell the equivalent of the main character in that used a giant cello case and daggers as his main weapons so I'm already beat on the interesting weapons front.

Ugh, why does this always happen.
