That would be great if it's true. The disc drive on my PS3 died after I got a PS4 so I never ended up replacing it, but I've got tons of PS3 games I would like to replay.

I'd believe PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility, because PCs have been able to emulate those for years with lower end hardware and Sony should have all the documentation they need to emulate better than PCs do

I refuse to believe this because if it's not true I'll be heartbroken. My PS2 library is glorious and I have no way of playing them without buying an HDMI converter which is supposedly subpar.

Cell is a fairly bizarre architecture, and not quite old enough to be adequately emulated.

As much as I'd love to believe the report, I very much doubt it will have full backwards compatibility. It feels like getting BC from the PS3 would be too much trouble for them to be worth it. Best case scenario, we get PS1/2/4 (which, would still be amazing)

It just makes perfect sense for Sony to do this. Backwards compatibility is one of the Xbox One's biggest selling points. But Sony has over twice as many games (12,000 vs 5500) when you add up the library totals of all of Sony's home consoles and all of Microsoft's.

Sony can solder a Cell chip right to the mainboard. The emulator community won't do that.

Most rumors have the PS5 running an 8-core Zen 2 processor, putting it in line with a Ryzen 7 3700. That's pretty powerful by modern PC standards.

And unlike the RPCS3 developers (who are doing an excellent job with what they have to work with btw), a Sony-developed emulator would be made by paid professionals with full access to the PS3's documentation and only a single set of hardware to optimize for.

I still don't think there's any chance the PS5 will emulate PS3 games because the power difference isn't enough, but Sony could code an emulator much easier than anyone else

They could, but they won't.

Just having x86 Backwards compatibility will be enough work for Sony.

So I realistically only expect PS4 Back Compat.

Everything else, own a PS1/PS2/PS3.

It's going to be far easier to maintain Back Compat moving foreward though since they seem to be sticking to x86 from AMD.

It sounds like the PS5 will handle PS4 BC by downclocking the console to basically play the games as natively as possible. Similar to how the PS4 Pro handles games that aren't enhanced.

So basically I'll believe it when I see it. It would take a lot of work to enhance older games.

That sounds right with all the info Digital Foundry has been releasing.

Having dedicated Clock settings to mimic older consoles is a cheap and easy way of implementing back compat.

PS4 already has enhanced PS2 games. But you have to buy them digitally.

The point is more that it's not something that works automatically. Microsoft put in the work to enhance older games for BC.

Could? Yes. Would it be better than what already exists? No. Would it eventually be better? Probably not given the tremendous head start disadvantage they have to deal with.

People say shit like this all the time and then it comes out and people disassemble and data mine it and find it's running at half the clock of stock with 2 cores inexplicably disabled / reserved exclusively for DRM operations or such other nonsense.

If they cared at all they could have started 10 years ago understanding that the PS4 would never be able to run it. I don't think they did this, but it is at least possible. It would take them nowhere near as long as the RPCS3 team has spent to get a much larger portion of the library in a playable state. From what I understand, it is largely the work of two people surviving on donations amounting to $3,000 per month, one of which is not even working full time. And it took quite a while to reach even that point. Things just don't take as long with full documentation eliminating the tremendous research and reverse engineering effort for a much larger team working full time.

I think for the most part the only real difference between the PS4 and PS5 will be the things I've mentioned in other topics. Reduced load times, increased frame rate and stability. We won't see stuff like better graphics and whatnot until a couple years in. As for your question, unless they remaster Horizon Zero Dawn, and Bloodborne, I think those are 2 games that people will continue to play.

Never bought a ps3 or ps4. Wasnt planning on this one, either, but the one way to change my mind would be to have nearly the entire physical library available. Sure, cant do much for online games with dead servers, but everything else? Yes, please.
